American Field Service (AFS) is best known for its year-long high school exchange programs, but it also offers shorter programs. Anyone age 15-30 can now apply for a month-long intensive Latvian language and culture summer program offered by AFS.

The 2010 program is set to take place June 12-July 12 in the western coastal city of Liepāja. A total of 15-20 participants will live with Latvian-speaking host families, thereby immersing themselves in the local culture, while also formally learning the language, history and culture of Latvia. All participants will also have the opportunity to take part in dancing, singing and Latvian cooking activities. Field trips will visit old towns and craft workshops, attend the National Youth Song and Dance Festival, and of course, join in a traditional summer solstice (Jāņi) celebration.

The program is an ideal way for young adults of Latvian heritage living abroad to experience and learn about their roots. No knowledge of Latvian language is necessary to participate in AFS programs.

2010. gada 12. un 13. jūlijs—ierakstiet šo datumu gada plānotājā! Šajās dienās Rīgā būs iespēja divas dienas pulcēties latviešu skolu skolotājiem, kas strādā latviešu skolās ārzemēs. Seminārs notiks tieši pēc Skolēnu dziesmu un deju svētkiem, kas notiks no 6. līdz 11. jūlijam.

2007. gada jūlijā notika skolotāju konference, ko rīkoja Latvijas valdības aģentūra LVAVA (Latviešu valodas apguves valsts aģentūra – tagad LVA) kopā ar PBLA. Konferencē skolotāji ļoti augsti novērtēja kopīgo situācijas iepazīšanu un pārrunāšanu kā arī iespējamu risinājumu un sadarbības meklēšanu, un skolotāji izteica lielu interesi par to, ka ik pa pāris gadiem varētu notikt līdzīga konference vai seminārs. Starplaikā ir notikuši divi LVAVA rīkoti diasporas skolotāju apmācību kursi, kurus apmeklējuši vairāki desmiti skolotāju no visas pasaules, un kuros jau pamati ielikti sadarbībai un domu un ideju izmaiņai.

2010. gada jūlija skolotāju seminārā iecerēts vairāk uzsvērt praktisko iemaņu apgūšanu un skolotāju domu izmaiņu. Lai gan semināra darba gaita vēl ir tapšanas stadijā, ir diezgan skaidrs, ka sekojošie un līdzīgi temati tiks iekļauti programmā:

Skolas struktūras izveidošana (priekšmetu izvēle, skolas “gaisotnes” un tēla izveidošana, vecāku līdzdalība, līmeņu nospraušana),
Vecāku un bērnu motivēšana,
Vecāku iesaistīšana mācību procesā,
Mācību vielas izvēle,
Mācību metodika,
Sadarbība ar Latvijas republikas Izglītības un zinātnes ministriju.

Seminārā mīļi gaidīti visi, kas darbojas latviskas izglītības laukā ārzemēs—gan mācot valodu, ģeografiju, vēsturi, folkloru, un citus priekšmetus, gan vadot bērnu dārzus, spēļu grupas, bērnu nometnes un citi!

The Copernicus Stipendium based in Germany has announced that a private sponsor wishes to finance one scholarship from Oct. 1, 2010, to Marcj 31, 2011, for a Latvian- and German-speaking undergraduate student.

This is not as unusual as it sounds, since sometimes private donors or institutions have a special connection to a country, city, or even university and therefore contact the Copernicus Stipendium offering to sponsor their scholarship program if they accept someone from a specific country, city or university.

Last year Copernicus had just one application from Latvia, but since it did not meet the necessary standards, no scholarship was awarded. Usually Copernicus receives up to three applications from Latvia every six months, so chances are good this time if a Latvian student fulfills the conditions and writes a good application.

Copernicus is a student association managed by students or former students whose aim is to sponsor Eastern European and Central Asian students in Berlin, Hamburg and Munich. The association offers 12-15 German-speaking students from Eastern Europe and Central Asia the opportunity to study at one of the three higher education institutions for one semester and subsequently complete a two- to three-month work placement.
