Irish solicitor disappointed by lack of charges in Saulīte case

The Irish attorney who represented murder victim Baiba Saulīte, the 28-year-old immigrant Latvian mother of two who was gunned down in November 2006, has expressed unhappiness that her suspected killer will not be charged.

John Hennessy, a solicitor in the Dublin suburb of Swords, told Irish newspaper The Herald that he is “bitterly disappointed” the Director of Public Prosecutions will not bring charges. Hennessy represented Saulīte in her custody battle before she was killed.

BALSSI intensive language courses set in Wisconsin

The Center for Russia, East Europe and Central Asia (CREECA) and the Department of Scandinavian Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison will host the Baltic Studies Summer Institute (BALSSI) from June 14-Aug. 6. BALSSI is sponsored by a consortium of 12 U.S. universities and receives additional support from the Association for the Advancement of Baltic Studies.

History museum exhibits games, toys

“Rotaļlietu noslēpumi pilī,” an exhibit of games and toys from the pre-computer age, runs from Jan. 7 until May 30 in the National History Museum of Latvia, Pils laukums 3, Rīga. Are all travel guides the same? Is this really just “another travel guide”? Fortunately not! Around Christmas a breath of fresh air could be felt wafting through the streets of RĪga. Although Rīga was in the depths of a financial crisis, this has not been a hindrance to many creative souls in the capital. New shops, cafes, cafeterias have sprung up. The new travel guide, Another Travel Guide Rīga is proof of this itself. The guide is presented in an unusual format—proving that not all travel guides are of the same ilk.

Sold: A piece of diplomatic history at 17th and Webster

On Jan. 7, in a quiet neighbourhood on the northwest side of Washington, D.C., the Latvian government sold a small piece of land that once had a big impact on our country’s history. The brown brick two-story building on the corner of 17th and Webster may have served as Latvia’s first embassy in the United States for 14 years, but for many it will always be remembered in its first diplomatic incarnation, as the Legation of Latvia.
