Parliament approves new Latvian government

A new government coalition, headed by new Prime Minister Einars Repše, has been approved by the Latvian parliament, according to local news media.
In a special session Nov. 7, the Saeima in a 55-43 vote approved a cabinet of ministers that draws from the ranks of four different and largely conservative political groups.

Summertime festivals abound in Latvia, featuring music, art, more

If you missed the Jāņi festivals across Latvia last month and will not make it in time for the 10th Latvian Youth Song and Dance Celebration in Rīga (July 6-11), the 16th International Early Music Festival (July 7-10), or the rock music celebration Saldus Saule (July 10), plenty of other cultural events are in the offing for the rest of the summer.

Scout jamboree slated for Jones
The 10th Latvian Girl Guide and Boy Scout Big Jamboree Camp will take place Aug. 14-21 at Wood Lake Scout Reservation, 10891 Withers St., Jones (located near the Latvian Center Gaŗezers in Three Rivers). Latvians participate in Edinburgh festival
“I Became Luminous,” a play by Ieva Strazdiņa, Jeffrey Gordon Baker and Latvian noise artist Error, will be performed daily at 13:30 hours Aug. 22-30 at the C aquila, Roman Eagle Lodge, Johnston Terrace, Edinburgh. The performance is part of Scotland’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The play is described as a mono-performance that “explores a young man’s physical and spiritual evolution in an oppressive, media-ruled society.” For further information, visit www.edfringe.com.

Passport tour continues across U.S.

More than 200 people have already renewed or applied for Latvian passports in the United States as part of an effort by the Latvian government to service citizens abroad before the Oct. 2 parliamentary election.

U.S. military funds renovation of 10 fire stations across Latvia
Ten fire stations across Latvia, most of them in the eastern part of the country, will be renovated during the next five years in a USD 1.5 million project funded by the U.S. military.

Book by German historian examines early years of Rīga Latvian Society
The Rīga Latvian Society and its landmark building at Merķeļa iela 13 have played an important role in fostering Latvian national identity. A recently released book, Rīgas Latviešu biedrība un latviešu nacionālā kustība no 1868. līdz 1905. gadam, examines the society’s early history.

Latvian long jumper earns gold, makes history in European championships
The fourth time was the charm for Latvian long jumper Ineta Radēviča, who scored big July 28 during the 20th European Athletic Championships in Spain, leaping to a new personal best and earning a gold medal for her country.
