Zemes Mala tackles deep thoughts on first album

If you don’t want to be a square, consider picking up a copy of Ģeometrija, the debut album by Zemes Mala released at the end of January that for some reason just in recent weeks has gotten notice in Latvian media.

The band, formed in 2000, includes Mareks Sarnovskis on guitar and vocals, Andris Ungurs on bass and Juris Lanavojs on drums.

Ģeometrija includes 12 tracks. The band worked on the recording all of last year, Sarnovskis said in an e-mail. The band’s music could be categorized as Christian rock, but it’s not the happy-sappy type so often heard in the genre. Instead, Zemes Mala’s lyrics are deeper (think of Kaspars Dimiters), the music just a bit edgier.

The album was recorded in the studios of Latvijas Kristīgais radio.

On the band’s Web site, www.zemesmala.com, visitors can learn more about Sarnovskis’ philosophy and hear samples of the group’s music. Dig a bit and you will also find details on and samples from Sarnovskis’ solo project from 2000, Zemes mala.
