Backflow, formerly known as Mary Jane, set to release debut album

At the beginning of 2007, the Latvian grunge rock band Mary Jane closed a chapter in its musical life and opened up a new one, reforming under the name Backflow. In just a few weeks, Backflow is scheduled to release its first album, Love and Peace.

Backflow’s album debut is set for April 11, complete with a release party in the Melnā Piektdiena club in Rīga.

The band describes itself as playing “a whole new brand of hard, brooding rock, taking grunge to the next step beyond.” Love and Peace is to include seven tracks.

Mary Jane existed from 1995-2006. The good news for Mary Jane fans is that the group’s 11 years of music will become available online on its memorial page at maryjane.draugiem.lv. According to an announcement on the page, Lost Innocence Vast Ego—Mary Jane’s only album, released in 2004—will be offered along with other music from the group’s archive.

Band members include Jānis Grants (voice and bass), Ernests Lībietis (voice and guitar) and Raivis Rubenis (voice and guitar), all of whom were in Mary Jane. Ēriks Lizbovskis (drums and vocals) joined Backflow in May 2007, replacing Brazilian transplant Jayr Fernandes, who had to return to his homeland.

Backflow won the Coca-Cola Soundwave! competition in 2007. A video of the band’s performance of “Let Me Be Your Star (Falling Down On You)” and background on the group is found here.
