Mazie smirdīgie kociņi, literally the “stinky little trees,” is either a Latvian indie band that exhibits a certain degree of genius or a Latvian indie band that, well, stinks. You decide. The band has made available a free digital EP, I-u-i putnu liesma, that can be downloaded from alternative music site Tornis.lv.
The EP includes three songs from MSK’s first album, Kraa (2007), one from the group’s next album and two from the band’s side project SUKI 2000, Tornis.lv announced March 8.
Some of MSK’s material sounds similar to other Latvian indie bands—minimalistic and atonal—but some tracks stand out musically or lyrically. On the EP, “Cepure Tallinā” and the title track “I-u-i putnu liesma” are worth a listen.
Formed in 2004, the band unveiled its first music video, for “Dramatiskā gramatika,” last year. The clip was directed by band member Simons as his art school thesis project. Read about the video on TVNET, or view the video on YouTube.
