S.P.B. wins contest to record single with SonyBMG

April 24, 2008

S.P.B. with its song “Poet” has won the Urban D Playground competition for Latvia, earning a deal to release a single through recording company SonyBMG. The band was one of 18 Latvian bands competing earlier this month in two days of live performances by the main railway station in downtown Rīga.

A total of 32,000 votes were cast for the band through the urbandplayground.com Web site. Results were announced April 24.

Runners-up were The Briefing with the song “Go Out Tonight,” Laime Pilnīga with “Time Song,” The Blackout with “Liar” and Screampiece with “Speed Of Sound.”

Similar competitions were held for bands in Estonia, Lithuania, Norway, Sweden and Finland.

Having listened to all the five songs, only The Briefing have an original sound, in my humble opinion. The winners, S.P.B. have obviously copied their vocal style from Brainstorm (Prata Vetra), and the other three bands are, as described on the urbanplayground.com web site, heavy.
