Latvian State Radio settles with AKKA/LAA over music use

February 25, 2008

Latvian State Radio has agreed to pay LVL 101,683 (about USD 216,000) as compensation for music it aired from 2002-2003, thus ending a court battle between the broadcaster and the country’s main licenser of copyrighted material, local media reported Feb. 25.

The Copyright and Communication Consulting Agency / Latvian Authors’ Association (Autortiesību un komunicēšanās konsultāciju aģentūra / Latvijas Autoru apvienība, or AKKA/LAA) last year sued the broadcaster demanding LVL 825,853 in compensation for the two years it had aired music without paying for it. Since 2004, the broadcaster has legally licensed music from AKKA/LAA.

AKKA/LAA is similar to other licensing agencies around the world. In the United States, for example, licensing agencies like the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) and Broadcast Music Inc. (BMI) allow their artists’ work to be used by radio stations, restaurants and other venues.

This was not the first time AKKA/LAA had gone after the public broadcaster. In 2004, the broadcaster lost a suit brought by the licenser and had to pay LVL 100,000 for music aired in 2000 and 2001. AKKA/LAA has gone after other broadcasters, too, such as Radio SWH and Radio Skonto.
