Jazz trumpeter Rozenbergs picked for lifetime achievement award
February 21, 2008
Jazz musician Gunārs Rozenbergs will receive this year’s lifetime achievement recognition during the Latvian Music Awards, program organizers announced Feb. 20.Rozenbergs, known for his trumpet playing as well as for his arrangements and compositions, was born in 1947. The height of his career, when he was known throughout the Soviet Union, was in the 1970s and 1980s. But, as several music journalists have noted, his star faded in the 1990s.
Rozenbergs returned briefly in guest appearances with bands like Satellites LV and Time After Time. That helped lead to a bit of a revival in his career, including the 2003 re-release of his 1979 album Laura on the Microphone Records label. His most recent work has been with the Mirage Jazz Orchestra big band, which unites a number of well-known Latvian jazz musicians.
The awards ceremony is scheduled March 8 in Rīga.
