February 16, 2008
The Latgallian folklore ensemble Ilža has released its first compact disc, the Rīga-based culture management center Lauska has announced. The self-titled disc includes 20 songs and dances. All the songs are in Latgallian and are accompanied by ensemble members playing traditional instruments. The disc also includes a remix of “Zynu, zynu, jādzu, jādzu” by Atis Auzāns as well as a video for “Saulriets Latgalē,” directed by Mathis Menneking of Germany.
The video also can be viewed on YouTube.
Menneking is the son of German-born Latvian artist Ilze Soikane-Mennekinga, whose painting “Ligās tomāti” graces the cover of the compact disc. Read more about her family and her work in a July 2004 article in Latvijas Vēstnesis titled Soikanu radošais gars - no paaudzes paaudzē.
Ilža was formed in 1990 and takes its name from the river that runs through the community of Cibla in the Ludza region, according to folklora.lv.
Lauska has become one of the major forces in releasing recordings of Latvian traditional music. Its was founded in 2003 by Daina Zvidriņa, Juris Zalāns, Kristīne Lazdāne and Zinta Pone.
