How to get a free dose of Dimiters
July 01, 2007
Can’t get enough of Kaspars Dimiters and his biting musical satire of Latvian society and politics? Then navigate over to the Web site of the political movement Eiroskeptiķi and download Dimiters’ Meiča ar saulainām cirtām un kokli. The song is about a girl with sunny curls and a kokle, the classic Latvian folk instrument. Of course, as it is a Dimiters songs, it’s not really a song about a girl with sunny curls and a kokle. It is about the formal loss of Abrene, the eastern district of Latvia stolen by the Soviet Union in 1944. Earlier this year, Latvia’s parliament ratified a border treaty with Russia that gives up Abrene forever. The Russian parliament has yet to ratify the treaty, but is expected to do so later this year.
Dimiters takes on political apathy and corruption, while pointing out that Latvians have forgotten the days when they stood together on the barricades in the face of Soviet tanks.
The track appeared in early February on the Web sites of several nationalist organizations, but it was penned in 2005 and Dimiters has previously performed it in concerts.
