Namejs ring
The most popular Latvian ring, the Namejs symbolizes belonging to the community of Latvians. The ring is steeped in the legend of the leader of the Semigallian tribes, who battled against the German crusaders of the 13th century. The ring is made of sterling silver.
Engagement ring
This traditional Latvian seven-day or engagement ring is made of sterling silver. Legend says the design came about when a young woman with seven admirers asked the village blacksmith to create a ring with seven charms, one for each of her suitors. Whichever suitor’s charm fell off first helped her decide who to marry.
Duo Sessions
Sisters Baiba and Lauma Skride have toured together for several years, pianist Lauma accompanying violinist Baiba. Now the duo has a recording appropriately titled Duo Sessions on which they perform sonatas by Franz Schubert, Ludwig van Beethoven and Maurice Ravel. The album was released in March 2007 in Germany.
A Taste of Latvia
For someone looking for an easy guide to the cuisine and culture of Latvia, Siri Lise Doub’s book A Taste of Latvia is a good choice. Published in 2000, the guide contains more than 100 recipes and is sprinkled with observations about traditional Latvian culture. However, our reviewer found some inconsistencies in translations and suggested that the recipes don’t contain enough dill.
Kurzeme mittens
To complement a folk costume—or, perhaps more importantly, to add some Latvian style to your winter garb—a pair of woolen mittens from Kurzeme might be just what you need. BalticShop offers a selection of them.
The Trudeau Vector
A quirky California epidemiologist and a Cold War veteran admiral from Russia are just two of the characters readers will encounter in Latvia-born Juris Jurjevics’ first novel. The Trudeau Vector shows that the co-founder of New York’s Soho Press can also write. A Visitor from Latvia
Canada-born Sandra Upeslācis’ first novel, published in October 2004, is described as “a story about love and relationships, loss and reconciliation, and the enduring resilience of families set against the backdrop of the Latvian-Canadian and contemporary Latvian experience.” The novel is about the Pētersons family of Toronto and the effect a young Latvian lawyer has on them—and especially his cousin, Klāra—when he visits. Upeslācis has worked as a journalist and public relations consultant.

Only a few artists from Latvia are represented in Apple Inc.'s popular iTunes Music Store. Here are some selections. If your computer has iTunes installed, clicking on the iTunes button will take you to the album's page in the online store, where you can purchase the individual tracks or the entire album. If your computer does not have iTunes, clicking on the button will take you to a Web site where you may download the free software.
1000000 it nekā
Tumsa, a band led by singer Mārtiņš Freimanis, hails from Liepāja—as do many of Latvia’s best musical artists. The 2004 release 1 000 000 it neka (A Million Nothings) contains 12 tracks, including such hits as “Dzīve kā košums” and “Kad Ēģiptē sniegs.”
For the Sleepy People
The debut album by the indie band Tribes of the City, released in 2006, is actually the second album by the group fronted by lead singer Ksenija Sundejeva. The band started life as The Movies, releasing its real debut, Running to the Sun, in 2004. The makeover is an effort to gain the band wider exposure. Among songs on the 10-track For the Sleepy People is the hit “A Day in the City.”
Four Shores
Released in 2006, Four Shores is the English version of Prāta Vētra’s 2005 album Četri krasti. The English version available through iTunes has 10 tracks, but the one released in Latvia had 12, the last two songs in Russian. Included are the hits “Tin Drums” and “Sunrise (Deep in Hell).”
Jubilejas dziesmu izlase
The popular children’s ensemble Dzeguzīte performs 22 tracks of favorite tunes in honor of its 30th anniversary. The album was released in 2002. Music is by Raimonds Pauls and lyrics by Guntars Račs.
Kremerland
The cover of the compact disc features a map of the Baltic republics, which might be enough reason to buy the album. But the music inside, performed by Latvia-born violinist Gidon Kremer and his Kremerata Baltica, is an even better reason. The recording features work by Baltic and Russian composers. Kremerata Baltica is a chamber orchestra drawn from the ranks of young musicians from the Baltics.
Latvian Sacred Song
Soprano Gunta Plostnieks’ 18-track recording of sacred music was released in 1999. The album features her performing, accompanied by organist Tālivaldis Deksnis, in the Dome Cathedral, St. John’s Church and St. Paul’s Church in Rīga.
Music from Latvia
Not sure what modern Latvian folk music sounds like? Don’t want to risk your money on an album by just one artist? Music from Latvia, released in 2004, offers a sampler of 14 tracks from performers such as Uģis Prauliņš, Laiksne, Biruta Ozoliņa and Vilki.
Numbvision
Released in 2000, Numbvision was the debut album by The Hobos. Good songwriting by lead singer Rolands Ūdris helped the album establish The Hobos as a top Latvian rock band. Included on the 12-track disc are hits like “She Sounds Like a Little Child” and “Christian (I’m Gonna Be).”
Perfect Solution
Perfect Solution, released in 2001, is the second album from The Hobos. The 12-track record was named Best Rock Album of 2001.
Radio Jah Jah
Released in 2004, Radio Jah Jah is a two-disc album by rock band The Hobos. The first disc has 10 tracks composed by band leader Rolands Ūdris, while the second disc contains cover versions of 12 well-known songs.
Veļu upe pārplūdus’
The well-known folklore ensemble Skandinieki performs 24 funeral songs from throughout Latvia. Despite the serious tone, the songs offer much for the listener, providing comfort and strength, according to our reviewer. The album was released in 2006.
