I don’t believe that provocative terms (such as the one you keep trotting out for people with a different lifestyle) are at all helpful, whether the times are permissive or whether it is pre-war, wartime or post war, high society or low.
There are such things as politeness and etiquette and just because others break the rules (and use a language of denigration) it is up to the individual to decide for him or herself whether one will just follow parrot fashion or not.

As to why parades are held, I can only speculate. The usual reason for a parade seems to be a celebration of something or other, in this case, presumably a celebration of being gay.
In my opinion, there is more to it than that, in the same sense that unionists like to put on huge marches, to show strength and solidarity in the face of oppression by employers (and often government itself).
There is unfortunately a world wide phenomenon called gay bashing and I presume that a parade would at the very least deter some gay bashers from assuming that their prey is isolated and alone in this big, big jungle, called society.
Therefore, holding such a parade in the middle of the night would be senseless, in the same way that a union march in the middle of the night would be ineffectual and totally useless.
In case you need to brush up on some of your gay history, refer to the classic turning point....
ie. when gays finally decided that enough (oppression) was enough.
As a group, after intravenous drug users, homosexuals have the next largest number of AIDS victims in countries with Western culture. Don’t let anyone stick you in any way, it is dangerous! Better stick to Platonic love!!!
“Therefore, holding such a parade in the middle of the night would be senseless, in the same way that a union march in the middle of the night would be ineffectual and totally useless”.
In otherwords, by holding the parade they wanted the society at large acknowledge and pay homage to them.
i agree with the words “acknowledge” but not “pay homage”....
isn’t it the right of every human to be recognised and acknowledged?
or do you wish to take the Hitler road and isolate those groups that you personally dislike, such as gays, transgendered, gypsies and Jewish people? (and of course others who don’t agree with your fascist tendencies)
“isn’t it the right of every human to be recognised and acknowledged?”
No, it is not. Recognition and acknowledgement is in the eye of the beholder that has to be earned and not spoon fed. Recognition and acknowledgment is what Hitler demanded.
