Three Latvian authors will participate in the Leipzig Book Fair, which runs March 13-16 in the Leipzig Exhibition Centre. Writers Laima Muktupāvela and Dace Rukšāne will meet with readers from 10:00-11:00 hours March 15 in the “Ladies aus Lettland” program moderated by translator Laura Efeja-Reinšmite. Presentation of the German translation of Muktupāvela’s novel Šampinjonu derība is scheduled from 12:30-13:45 hours. Both Muktupāvela and the translator, Berthold Forssman, will be present. The Daugavas Vanagi will commemorate the Latvian Legion with a concert by composer and pianist Aivars Broks at 3 p.m. March 15 at the Daugavas Vanagi House, 115 West 183rd St., Bronx. See the popular film Defenders of Rīga (Rīgas sargi) in an exclusive screening at 6:30 p.m. March 17 at the Directors Guild Theater, 110 West 57th St. (between 6th and 7th Avenue), New York. Defenders of Rīga dramatizes the events of Nov. 11, 1919—Lačplēsis Day—a crucial date in the battle for Latvian independence. Filmed in Latvia and released in November, the film is not only the most ambitious feature-length production in the history of Latvian cinema but also the highest grossing box office film to be released in Latvia, seen already by 140,000 viewers. The film is in Latvian with English sub-titles. The film’s producer, Andrejs Ēķis, will introduce the screening. The film begins at 7 p.m. with a reception at 6:30 p.m. Tickets for the film and pre-screening reception are USD 25 and will be available at the door on the night of the screening. Celebrate the spring equinox—Lieldienas —the ultra-traditional way March 22-23 at Dievsēta, 19264 Bittersweet Ave., Warrens. Folks arrive at Dievsēta earlier in the day Saturday to color eggs, make decorations, and prepare a dinner. On Sunday morning everbody gets up before sunrise to wash the sleep out of their eyes in a nearby spring, greet the sun, and literally swing in the spring. An exhibit of paintings by Ansis Butnors, “Ansis Butnors: recente schilderijen,” runs from March 23 to April 27 in the Galerie Nieuw Schoten, Frans Halsstraat 17, Haarlem. Sergejs Jēgers to sing in Toronto

Counter-tenor Sergejs Jēgers will perform at 2 p.m. March 30 in the Glenn Gould Studio, Canadian Broadcasting Centre, 250 Front St. W., Toronto. Jēgers is a graduate of the Latvian Academy of Music and continued his studies with Andreas Scholl at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Switzerland. His repertoire includes Handel’s “Messiah,” Pergolesi’s “Stabat Mater” and cantatas by Bach and Vivaldi. His opera appearances include the Angel in Rubinstein’s “The Demon,” the title role in Handel’s “Rinaldo” and Orpheus in Gluck’s “Orpheus and Euridice.” This will be Jēgers’ debut recital in Canada, and he will be accompanied by Toronto pianist Īrisa Purene.
