March 01: Ireland; Latvian Hawks vs. Dundalk Bulls; The Latvian Hawks ice hockey team faces off against the Dundalk Bulls in a game scheduled to start at 20:00 hours March 1 in the Dundalk Ice Dome, Dundalk Retail Park, Dundalk. March 07–08: Minnesota; Teachers’ conference in Minneapolis; The annual American Latvian Association-sponsored school teachers’ conference is set March 7-9 in the Latvian Ev.-Lutheran Church of Minneapolis and St. Paul, 3152 17th Ave. S., Minneapolis. March 07: New York; Broks and Kudiņa in concert; As a part of the “Aivars Broks, ASV...no abām pusēm” concert series, Aivars Broks and Ilona Kudiņa present a concert at 7:30 p.m. March 7 at the Estonian House, 243 East 34th St., New York. This evening of “not so serious instrumental music” will feature Broks on piano and his student, Kudiņa, on flute. Admission is USD 15. March 08: New Jersey; Aivars Broks concert; As a part of his “Aivars Broks, ASV...no abām pusēm” concert series, composer Aivars Broks will perform “Upurēšana” (The Sacrificing) at 7 p.m. March 8 at the Montclair Art Museum, 3 South Mountain Avenue, Montclair. March 08: Latvia; American Chamber of Commerce in Latvia celebrates 15th annviersary; The American Chamber of Commerce will host a dinner in honor of its 15th anniversary in Latvia at 18:00 hours March 8 at the Latvian Society House (Rīgas latviešu biedrības nams), Merķeļa ielā 13, Rīga. Latvian President Valdis Zatlers will be the keynote speaker. This will also be the first opportunity for the new U.S. Ambassador to Latvia, Charles W. Larson Jr., to meet with and address the chamber. A charity raffle raise funds for the Ronald McDonald House Charities Latvija Foundation, whose first project will be to establish the CareMobile—a mobile health unit offering medical services and educational programs free of charge to children and youth in rural Latvia. March 09: Queensland; Kabare de Riga; Return to the Rīga of the 1920s and 1930s and the “Hotel de Rome” cabaret with the Sydney Latvian Theater and friends’ performance of “Kabare de Riga” at 14:00 hours March 9 at Saule Ltd. March 11: Switzerland; Stammtisch topic: The Occupation Museum in Riga; Latvians in Switzerland will meet at 18:45 hours March 11 at the Honorary Consulate of Latvia, Münsterhof 13, Zürich. Ausra Lielinite will speak about the Occupation Museum in Rīga, and dinner at the nearby restaurant Zeughauskeller will follow at 19:30. March 13: Texas; Mona De Bo at SXSW festival; Latvian two-man rock band Mona De Bo performs during the SXSW Music Conference and Festival at 6 p.m. March 13 in BD Riley’s Irish Pub, 204 East 6th St., Austin. Formed in 2005, the Rīga-based band consists of Edgars Eihmanis (drums) and Edgars Rubenis (guitar and vocals).; Rīga-based Mona De Bo performs March 13 during the SXSW Music Conference and Festival in Austin, Texas.

March 15–16: Germany; Latvian writers in Leipzig; Three Latvian authors will participate in the Leipzig Book Fair, which runs March 13-16 in the Leipzig Exhibition Centre. Writers Laima Muktupāvela and Dace Rukšāne will meet with readers from 10:00-11:00 hours March 15 in the “Ladies aus Lettland” program moderated by translator Laura Efeja-Reinšmite. Presentation of the German translation of Muktupāvela’s novel Šampinjonu derība is scheduled from 12:30-13:45 hours. Both Muktupāvela and the translator, Berthold Forssman, will be present. March 15: New South Wales; Spars awards ceremony; The Sydney Latvian Association’s sports chapter “Spars” will host an awards ceremony at noon March 15 in the Sydney Latvian House, 32 Parnell St., Strathfield. The event is free of charge.

March 15: New South Wales; Latvian Legion commemoration; Artis Medenis will be the featured speaker at this year’s commemoration of the Latvian Legion beginning ar 13:00 hours March 15 in the Daugavas Vanagi House, 32 Stanley St., Bankstown.

March 15: Victoria; Fishing club celebrates anniversary; The Latvian Fishing Club “Āķis” will celebrate its 40th anniversary at 14:00 hours March 15 in the Latvian House, 3 Dickens St., Elwood. March 15: New York; Latvian Legion commemoration, concert; The Daugavas Vanagi will commemorate the Latvian Legion with a concert by composer and pianist Aivars Broks at 3 p.m. March 15 at the Daugavas Vanagi House, 115 West 183rd St., Bronx. Doors will open and appetizers will be served beginning at 2 p.m. Coffee and desserts will be available after the concert. All foods will be prepared by “Dzintara galds” and are included in the admission price of USD 25. Proceeds from the concert will go to benefit immobile legionnaires in Latvia. March 15: South Australia; Latvian Legion commemoration in Adelaide; Join Adelaide-area Latvians for a commemorative program at 14:00 hours March 15 in the Daugavas Vanagi House, 23 Clark St., Wayville. Irīna Ozoliņa will speak about an eyewitness account of the bombing of Dresden. The Daugavas Vanagi men’s choir “Daugava” will perform.

March 15: Queensland; Latvian Legion commemoration; The Brisbane chapter of the Daugavas Vanagi will host an event commemorating Col. Oskars Kalpaks and the Latvian Legion at 15:00 hours March 15 at Saule Ltd. (Latvian House), 24 Church Court, Buranda. Admission by donation.

March 16: Western Australia; Latvian Legion commemoration; A commemorative program honoring Col. Oskars Kalpaks and the Latvian Legion will take place at 13:00 hours March 16 in the Latvian Centre, 60 Clever Terrace, Belmont.

March 16: South Australia; Aternoon of songs at Latvian school; Enjoy an afternoon of songs hosted by the Adelaide Latvian School at 16:00 hours March 16 in the Adelaide Latvian Cooperative Latvian House “Tālava,” 4 Clark St., Wayville.

March 17: New York; ‘Defenders of Rīga’ to be screened; See the popular film Defenders of Rīga (Rīgas sargi) in an exclusive screening at 6:30 p.m. March 17 at the Directors Guild Theater, 110 West 57th St. (between 6th and 7th Avenue), New York. Defenders of Rīga dramatizes the events of Nov. 11, 1919—Lačplēsis Day—a crucial date in the battle for Latvian independence. Filmed in Latvia and released in November, the film is not only the most ambitious feature-length production in the history of Latvian cinema but also the highest grossing box office film to be released in Latvia, seen already by 140,000 viewers. The film is in Latvian with English sub-titles. The film’s producer, Andrejs Ēķis, will introduce the screening. The film begins at 7 p.m. with a reception at 6:30 p.m. Tickets for the film and pre-screening reception are USD 25 and will be available at the door on the night of the screening. March 19: South Australia; Novuss in Adelaide; Enthusiasts of novuss will gather for a few rounds of the game at 13:00 hours March 19 in the Adelaide Latvian Cooperative Latvian House “Tālava,” 4 Clark St., Wayville.

March 21: Minnesota; Good Friday service in Minneapolis; A Good Friday service with Holy Communion is scheduled at 14:00 hours March 21 in the Latvian Ev.-Lutheran Church of Minneapolis and St. Paul, 3152 17th Ave. S., Minneapolis. Music will be provided by cellist Joe Kaisert.

March 21: United Kingdom; Good Friday service in London; A Good Friday service with Holy Communion is scheduled at 16:00 hours March 21 in the Church of St. Anne and St. Agnes,Gresham Street, London. The Rev. Elīza Zikmane will lead the service.

March 22: Pennsylvania; “Rīgas sargi” in Philadelphia; The 2007 feature film Rīgas sargi, directed by Aigars Grauba, will be presented at noon March 22 in the International House, 3701 Chestnut St., Philadelphia. The film is in Latvian with English subtitles. Admission is USD 15.

March 22–23: Wisconsin; Lieldienas at Dievsēta; Celebrate the spring equinox—Lieldienas —the ultra-traditional way March 22-23 at Dievsēta, 19264 Bittersweet Ave., Warrens. Folks arrive at Dievsēta earlier in the day Saturday to color eggs, make decorations, and prepare a dinner. On Sunday morning everbody gets up before sunrise to wash the sleep out of their eyes in a nearby spring, greet the sun, and literally swing in the spring. March 22–24: Ireland; Čikāgas piecīši in concert tour; The popular Latvian-American group Čikāgas piecīši is scheduled to perform three concerts in Ireland from March 22-24. The group will perform at 17:00 hours March 22 in Mchugh’s Bar & Venue, 1-3 Chord Road, Drogheda. Tickets may be reserved by calling +353 879412668. March 23: Ontario; Easter at St. Andrew’s; Two Easter morning services are scheduled March 23 in St. Andrew’s Ev. Lutheran Latvian Church, 383 Jarvis St., Toronto. The first service, at 6:30 a.m., will be in Latvian, followed by an 8 a.m. breakfast. The second service, at 9 a.m., will be in English.

March 23: Victoria; Easter services in Melbourne; Three Easter morning services are scheduled March 23 in the Church of the Holy Cross, 40 Warrigal Road, Surrey Hills. The first service is at 6:30 a.m. and will include the church choir. At 9 a.m., an English service is scheduled. The 11 a.m. service will include confirmation and Holy Communion.

March 23: United Kingdom; Easter services at Rowfant House; Easter services with Holy Communion are scheduled at 07:00 and 11:30 hours March 23 a Rowfant House, Wallage Lane, Crawley. The service will be led by the Rev. Elīza Zikmane.

March 23: New South Wales; Easter services in Sydney; Two Easter morning services are scheduled March 23 in the Latvian Ev. Lutheran Church in Sydney, which meets at St. John’s Church, 30 Bridge Road, Homebush. The first service is at 7 a.m. and includes Holy Communion. The second service, at 11 a.m., includes Holy Communion and confirmation.

March 23: Illinois; Easter services at Zion church; Two Easter morning services are scheduled March 23 in the Zion Latvian Ev.-Lutheran Church, 6551 W. Montrose Ave., Chicago. The first service begins at 7 a.m. and includes participation of the Zion Church Choir and the Bell Ensemble. An Easter breakfast follows the service. The second service, with a special address to children, begins at 10 a.m. and includes participation of the church ensemble and children’s ensemble.

The first service will include participation of the church choir and will be followed by a pancake breakfast. The second service will include Holy Communion and special music.

March 23: New York; Easter service in Yonkers; An Easter service and breakfast are scheduled beginning at 8 a.m. March 23 in the New York Ev. Lutheran Latvian Church, 254 Valentine Lane, Yonkers.

March 23: New York; Easter service on Long Island; An Easter service is scheduled at 8 a.m. March 23 in the New York Ev. Lutheran Latvian Church, 4 Riga Lane, Melville. An egg hunt follows the service. Participants should bring baskets to share.

March 23: Massachusetts; Easter service in Boston; An Easter morning service, led by visiting minister the Rev. Artis Burovs, is scheduled at 8 a.m. March 23 in the Latvian Ev.-Lutheran “Trimda” Church of Boston, 58 Irving St., Brookline. Following the service, an Easter breakfast prepared by the ladies auxiliary is scheduled.

March 23: Maryland; Easter service, breakfast; An Easter service is scheduled at 8 a.m. March 23 in the Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church of Washington D.C., 400 Hurley Ave., Rockville. An Easter breakfast follows the service. General admission to the breakfast is USD 20; admission for children is USD 6.

March 23: California; Easter service in Los Angeles; An Easter service is scheduled at 9 a.m. March 23 in the Latvian Ev. Lutheran Church of Southern California, 1927 Riverside Drive, Los Angeles. Easter breakfast follows the service.

March 23: Québec; Easter service in the Latvian Center; An Easter service for the Trinity Latvian Ev. Lutheran Church is scheduled at 9 a.m. March 23 in the Latvian Center, 3955 Provost, Lachine. A breakfast will follow and participants are asked to bring a basket of food to share.

March 23: California; Easter service in San Francisco; An Easter service is scheduled at 10 a.m. March 23 in the Northern California Latvian Ev.-Lutheran Church, 425 Hoffman Ave., San Francisco. Breakfast follows the service.

March 23: Germany; “Rīgas sargi” in Münster; The feature film Rīgas sargi, which depicts one day in Rīga during the War of Independence, will be screened at 12:00 hours March 23 in Cineplex Münster, Albersloher Weg 14, Münster. March 23–April 27: Netherlands; Exhibit features artist Ansis Butnors; An exhibit of paintings by Ansis Butnors, “Ansis Butnors: recente schilderijen,” runs from March 23 to April 27 in the Galerie Nieuw Schoten, Frans Halsstraat 17, Haarlem. Butnors, born in 1977, studied at the J. Rozentāls Art High School and the Latvian Academy of Art. The gallery is open from 13:00-17:00 hours Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. March 27–29: United Kingdom; Dzelzs Vilks concert series; The music group Dzelzs Vilks will play three acoustic concerts in the United Kingdom, presenting both rock music and world music. The second concert is at 20:00 hours March 28 at the Daugavas Vanagi Fund House - Bradford, 5 Clifton Villas, Bradford, West Yorkshire. March 28: Victoria; Tavern evening in Melbourne; Melbourne-area Latvians will gather for an evening of songs, socializing and drinks beginning at 19:00 hours March 28 at the Latvian Relief Society “Daugavas Vanagi,” 87 Chetwynd St., North Melbourne.

March 29: Queensland; Zolīte afternoon in Brisbane; The Daugavas Vanagi sponsors a monthly gathering for enthusiasts of the card game zolīte. Come and play at 13:00 hours March 29 in the Latvian House, 24 Church Court, Buranda. Admission is AUD 5.

March 29: United Kingdom; Easter service in Bristol; An Easter service is scheduled at 15:00 hours March 29 at St. Bartholomew Church, Somerville Road, Montpelier, Bristol. The service will be lead by the Rev. Dean Andris Abakuks and the Rev. Elīza Zikmane.

March 29: Ontario; Latvian folklore in Ottawa; Celebrate the Ottawa Latvian Association’s 25th anniversary with an evening of Latvian folk dances and music at 17:00 hours March 29 at the Peace Latvian Ev.-Lutheran Church, 83 Main St., Ottawa. Folk dancers from Ottawa and Montreal, as well as the Ottawa kokle ensemble and other musicians, will perform. A hearty meal and drinks will be on sale following the program. March 30: Ontario; Sergejs Jēgers to sing in Toronto; Counter-tenor Sergejs Jēgers will perform at 2 p.m. March 30 in the Glenn Gould Studio, Canadian Broadcasting Centre, 250 Front St. W., Toronto. Jēgers is a graduate of the Latvian Academy of Music and continued his studies with Andreas Scholl at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Switzerland. His repertoire includes Handel’s “Messiah,” Pergolesi’s “Stabat Mater” and cantatas by Bach and Vivaldi. His opera appearances include the Angel in Rubinstein’s “The Demon,” the title role in Handel’s “Rinaldo” and Orpheus in Gluck’s “Orpheus and Euridice.” This will be Jēgers’ debut recital in Canada, and he will be accompanied by Toronto pianist Īrisa Purene. March 30: Victoria; Preserving Jaunsudrabiņš’ memory; Ilze Līduma, the director of the Jānis Jaunsudrabiņš museum in Nereta, Latvia, will speak at 14:00 hours March 30 at the Latvian Retirement Village, 60 Fraser Crescent, Wantirna South. Admission is by donation. All proceeds will benefit the museum.
