The film, in Latvian with English subtitles, depicts the November 1919 battle for Rīga against rogue German forces. The screening is sponsored by the Chicago Latvian Association. ‘Vogelfrei’ screened in Sydney festival

The feature film Vogelfrei, in which four Latvian directors examine a day in the life of a man at four stages in his life, will be screened during the 55th Sydney Film Festival. The showings are at 4:20 p.m. June 7 in the Greater Union George Street, 505-525 George St., Sydney, and at 6:30 p.m. June 10, also in Greater Union George Street. The 92-minute film is in Latvian and Russian. Directors Jānis Kalējs, Gatis Šmits, Jānis Putniņš and Anna Viduleja will be present to discuss the film. Family Day at Rowfant House

A summer Family Day event begins at 10:30 a.m. June 8 at Rowfant House, Wallage Lane, Rowfant, Crawley. A church service for children is scheduled at 11 a.m. Activities for children start at 11:30 a.m. and include arts, crafts and athletics. While the kids are busy, parents will be able to learn more about Rowfant House. At 2 p.m. children will receive awards, after which an open-air concert is planned featuring the choir and dancer from the Rīga Latvian Society, the London Latvian Choir, and local British choirs. The event is free, but there is a charge for food and beverages.

Archbishop to speak at June 14 event

Archbishop Jānis Vanags of the Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church will be the featured speaker during the June 14 commemoration scheduled at 6 p.m. June 14 in the Latvian Ev.-Lutheran Church of Minneapolis and St. Paul, 3152 17th Ave. S., Minneapolis. The program will be introduced by Maija Zaeska, vice chairperson of the Latvian Organization Association of Minnesota. Pupils of the Minneapolis and St. Paul Latvian School will read passages from Sibīrijas bērni and play the kokle. The program will be closed by Laila Švalbe, head of the Latvian school. Refreshments will be available after the program. Adult admission is by donation, but children get in free.

‘Škroderdienas Silmačos,’ then Jāņi in Grez-Doiceau

Latvians in Belgium are invited to celebrate Jāni with two events June 21. The Brussels Latvian Theater will perform the classic Rūdolfs Blaumanis play “Skroderdienas Silmačos” at 15:00 hours in the offices of the Latvian Permanent Representative to the European Union, avenue des Arts 23, Brussels. Afterward, a bus will leave at 18:30 hours for a meadow near Grez-Doiceau for līgo celebrations together with Lithuanians in Belgium. A large tent will provide shelter in the meadow, but participants may also bring their own tents. The folklore ensemble Madaviņa from Latvia will provide live music. The bus will return to Brussels at 1:30 hours June 22. Admission is EUR 8 if paid in advance or EUR 10 on the day of the event. The Latvian Association of Southern California is organizing a Jāņi celebration beginning at 3 p.m. June 21 at White Rock Lake, 10645 Soledad Canyon Road, Saugus. The evening is to include singing, dancing and food. A novuss table also will be available for those who wish to play. Participants should bring their own tents and sleeping bags. A summer solstice celebration begins at 7 p.m. June 21 at Camp Sidrabene, 5100 Appleby Line, Milton West. Exhibit features artwork by Puriņš

Illustrations, painting and mixed media by artist Ansis Puriņš are part of the exhibit “Ink & Steel” running June 27-July 18 at SPACE 242, 242 E. Berkeley St., 2nd floor, Boston. This is the first full exhibit by cartoonist and illustrator Puriņš in nearly a decade. His work may be described as “kitsch horrific,” according to the gallery. Work by Puriņš has been published in newspapers and magazines. In 2007 he won Print Magazine‘s Regional Design Award. He self-publishes the comics Zombre, Gnome Gathering and Duppy. Multiethnic Midsummer in Indianapolis

The Latvian, Estonian, Lithuanian, Polish, Scottish and Swedish societies of Indiana host a Midsummer celebration in the afternoon and evening of June 28 at the Latvian Community Center, 1008 W. 64th St., Indianapolis. Events include Scottish and Estonian games, tug-of-war, corn hole, bocce ball, basketball, a children’s balloon bounce, and flower and oak leaf crown making. Celebrate the summer solstice with the Latvians in Moscow at 17:00 hours on June 28 at the ethnic museum in Kolomenskaya Park, Moscow.
