- ‘Defenders of Rīga’ to be screened
See the popular film Defenders of Rīga (Rīgas sargi) in an exclusive screening at 6:30 p.m. March 17 at the Directors Guild Theater, 110 West 57th St. (between 6th and 7th Avenue), New York. Defenders of Rīga dramatizes the events of Nov. 11, 1919—Lačplēsis Day—a crucial date in the battle for Latvian independence. Filmed in Latvia and released in November, the film is not only the most ambitious feature-length production in the history of Latvian cinema but also the highest grossing box office film to be released in Latvia, seen already by 140,000 viewers. The film is in Latvian with English sub-titles. The film’s producer, Andrejs Ēķis, will introduce the screening. The film begins at 7 p.m. with a reception at 6:30 p.m. Tickets for the film and pre-screening reception are USD 25 and will be available at the door on the night of the screening. A second screening will take place March 29.
