As some of you may be aware, a parliament committee has been debating abortions in Latvia, even though the number of abortions is at the lowest point in the post-Soviet Latvia. On Monday night, TV-5’s Mamykin ran a show discussing the issue of abortions with a group of gynecologists. At the end of the show, he asked parents to take children from TV before he said, “Maybe this will change your mind.”

He showed a video of an abortion being performed. “If we accept the point of view of defenders of abortions, then there’s no difference between drilling a tooth, a shot against the flu and an abortion. This is why we at TV-5 now have to have a right to show abortions from early dawn to late night,” said the host. “After all, this is just ‘a regular operation’, an unborn baby is just ‘a biological material’ and those who doesn’t understand this are ‘uneducated cavemen.’”

The caveman reference actually sounds like they’re preaching to some squakers in the LOL choir….pick up your mallets and grunt on the upbeat, “And a one and a two and a….”

Abortion is such a firestorm issue for so many people who have little patience for actually absorbing the facts that underpin it. How can a nation (Latvia) that proudly villifies the existence of alternative sexual orientation (i.e. homosexuality) possibly weigh in on a woman’s right to choose what happens with her body after a caveman has his way with her? What’s that? There are no cavemen left in the motherland? Have you logged into LOL lately?

Meanwhile, we’re not doing a whole lot better in parsing through the nuances of this issue here in the U.S.A.
