Every time I log on, there are 50+ readers.

How about more of this 50+ viewers make their contribution to this subject?

To become a ‘membe / subscirber’ the auto response is “we will contact You”.
Forget it ... it does not happen.
Wait for a couple of days, and I’m sure you will be ‘accepted’ automatically, using the details you originally put in.
We need more input of personal experiences, rather than the newspaper/youtube references., which for some reason are treated as gospel, truths.

Make your point, state your point, from your life experience / philosophy.

marisr et al.,

There has been plenty of input, it is just that you have become active on LOL only fairly recently.  Read and comment on what has been diiscussed before your time on LOL.

As to ” philosophy’  read some of the topics discussed under religion.

Amen!  For whatever it’s worth, posts about personal experiences in Latvia then and now are the main reason I joined LOL 15(?) years ago and continue to read the forum—and post, occasionally, my own experiences.  But, unfortunately, there are one or two “contributors” who make a habit of constantly deriding such experiences as useless, self-serving “anecdotes” and drown the forum in “references.”

But, all in all, LOL is a very valuable resource, provided one can sift out the garbage.

Bruno.
personally I stay a long way away from matters of religion.
And am slowly plowing my way through the archival material.
There is a lot to read ... slowly slowly.

I had actually been reading this forum for about a year before making a post.
The amount of personal attacks on posters surprised me. Still does.
And yes, I’ve fallen into that trap as well.
Hopefully I’ve corrected myself.

Those of you in Riga at the moment, I hope you enjoy the current Riga City festival.

Aleks ... your second youtube link ... are you saying the soviet investment / interference saved Latvia?  that Latvia could not have ‘made it’ by itself?

maris, unfortunately, history doesn’t work in the subjunctive. It is difficult to know what could have, would have been. All I was saying is that Latvia wasn’t all doom and gloom under the occupation… or the occupancy if you insist.

Yep. You think there was nothing good in Latvia during the occupation? Not even the Latvian Song Festival? Or were those people forced to the Soviet Latvian song festival?

i did not say that!

we had a great sports program. i got to train
with Gailis at the Daugava stadium.

living in Ogre was the best part, but
the babushki standing on the apron
at the train station woud be very distracting.
i mean, they had to dis everybody
walking by.

What did you say, PB?

I said that the reason most people in that video look
like they have just swallowed a lemon is because
they have just swallowed a lemon. A sign of happiness.

ps. lemons were hard to come by, occassionally.

p.s.s and now you are looking for a video of
mountains ol lemons in Central Market.

People in Latvia still don’t smile as much as in the West, especially if you come here during a winter…
