Currently in Latvija - and looking to make a certain dish. I require Hollandaise Sauce - but can’t find a translation in the dictionaries I have searched. Anyone know what it is called in Latvian - please and thanks.

It’s same in any language, except Dutch ( is there such?) LOL

...there is a category of words called “sveshvardi”, and this is one of those; for example, you won’t find “crepes” in a Latvian dictionary either, but I’ve ordered them in a restaurant in Riga!!!

Thanks Peter - while I prepare many things well - sauces included - hollandaise is not one that i would think I could make. My understanding here is that they are not much into sauces. To make certain things though - you need certain sauces. Rimi or Maxima should have, but at the same time - I am now curious. It seems to me that we used to call sauces “zoste” - but it seems now almost everything is “merce” - gravy. am I right - or did I miss the boat somewhere>

Zoste is what my granny fed us, mmmmmmmmmmmm good.

Blame it on Latvian Nationalists (Fashists ? Nazis?).

My President of National Latvia (May 1934-June 1940, Dr. Karlis Ulmanis, in about 1935 said that, as we are (unhyphenated) Latvians, masters in our own land of our forebears, we must, instead of absorbing non-Latvian vocabulary, find and use true Latvian words. I remember the howling of Livonian grannies, that they cannot express themselves without German culture, and same in Lettgalian about Polak and Russian imbedded words. And, of course, like all civilized languages, one is not educated, if one cannot stick in some yiddish words. 

The international Latvia is aping Hussein O’s America, just scared to be left out of the (whichever) one world of brownies, is more than glad, in my opinion, to destroy the language, that has more sensitivity in expressions and variants in descriptions than , my opinion again,  any other language in the world.

Why “Latvju Dainas” are acknowledged as unique (unikas ?) in this world? (Or at least on this earth?)

P. S. Reading modern “Latvian”  writings I often encounter the word “seks”. The only approximation I can find is “seskis”, in German, I believe called “Stinktier”, which Google pleasantly translates into Latvian as “skunkss”. And you are trying to tell me that the current Latvian language does not stink?
