Hello. I really hope someone can help me find my family! My father (Modris Kirchner/Kirchners) was born in Kuldiga in 1943 at a house on Skrundas Iela and arrived in New Zealand (on the Wanganella, I think) in 1950. He was with his mother Otilija (maiden name Kirchner), stepfather Arturs Tvintikis, his two sisters and his aunt Olga Kirchner (maiden name Hoffman).
We are looking for my father’s real father and we think his name may have been Kopfstahl or something similar. He never married my grandmother, hence my father taking her maiden name as his last name. My father’s father would likely be at least in his late 80s or older if he is still alive. I feel certain my father would have siblings and nieces and nephews he has never met.
We travelled to Latvia four years ago to search the records in the town hall in Kuldiga but found nothing except my father’s birth certificate that did not name his father.
We believe the Kopfstahl(?) family owned land in or around Kuldiga as that is where my grandmother worked and where she met my father’s father.
Sadly, my Omam passed away nearly 30 years ago without leaving us any information. We are relying on the memory of my father’s stepfather as to names and places.
Please, if anyone can help with any information, even if you’re not sure how accurate it is, I’d really appreciate it. My father will be travelling back to Kuldiga in a few weeks’ time to try again to find our family and it would be great if he could find them.
