As ASV’s ex-president Ronald Reagan was fond of introducing topics, “W-e-l-l-l-l…..”, Zatlers did at least one thing out of the playbook for how to succeed in politics as a populist. He accepted responsibility. Responsibility for the defection of the “Dissident 6”. The whole fiasco however still begs a lot of questions. “What really happened?” is one such question. Zatlers’ public acceptance of responsibility this evening at an event in Riga (just reported by the newspaper “Diena”) sheds absolutely no light on the subject, other than reporting that Zatlers takes full responsibility for the public embarrassment and is now ready to move on with the heavy lifting. Nothing whatsoever, though, to indicate what “might have tipped the balance”, as one recent LOL poster might have poetically put it.

I’m not clear on what actually happened either, but I’m sure that the voters’ collective curiosity has not been the least bit quenched by this too-little-too-late acceptance of responsibility by Zatlers. For all I know, he might have taken responsibility for something he isn’t even responsible for because he’s such an unseasoned politician who is entirely out of his natural element and is still groping to figure out how this political game is different from the field of medicine that achieved competence in for many years.
