Vairodzins.

Mr. Aussie -

Taylor - Bender’s Waffen-SS, vol.5, page 42:

15.9.1943. Reichsführer -SS Heinrich Himmler ordered that the Latvian Legion should wear a shield in Latvian national colors with the word ” LATVIJA” on the upper right sleeve.

15.4.1944. Sleeve shield henceforth to be worn on the upper left sleeve of the uniform - one finger’s width below the SS sleeve eagle.

1.6. 1944.  (General) Bangerskis referred to an order whereby from this date sleeve shields had to be transferred from the right arm to the left sleeve under the sleeve eagle. Type “F” what the Germans considered the official Waffen-SS pattern, probably introduced during June 1944.

1.8. 1944. Type “F” already introduced.—-

9.9.1944. The previous order of 15.4. 1944 was repeated and to be complied with no later than 1. 10. 1944.

1.2.1945.  Type “F” appeared on the “11.2.1945 map” of Amtsgruppe D of the SS-Hauptamt.

I myself do not consider Taylor as a unquestionable source, but this information with its footnotes should be acceptable.

Not much to go by, is it?
Several years ago, as I recall, ebay offered for sale “Latvian military sleeve shield”. It was one of US Army Military Labor Service (Melnie) issue for the years 1947-1949 or thereabouts. When I inquired about it, the page was blocked with a note - ebay does not sell NAZI items to United States.

“Latvju Tauta” is the “rightful owner” of Latvija.

Mr LL:

Thank you for that information; it is actually quite useful

Since the Latvian shield is on his right arm in my grandfather’s photograph, this suggests that he was posted to the Legion between 15/09/1943 and 15/04/1944.

So knowing where the Legion was between those dates would give a general location for him.

More pieces for the puzzle!
