As I was going through the list of Iron Cross winners I came upon the entry
Gaisa Spēku palīdze-meitene(vārds nav zināms)
DKII, 01.10.1944.GS-isp. meitene
I was taken by surprise to see a Latvian woman given the Iron Cross. I wonder how one would find who this female was that defies German male inferiority. How or where would one check out this information?.

born in Orgishof/Livonia (= Urga/Latvia) Sept. 9th, 1908
teacher and auxiliary nurse
She was KIA in Küstrin on March 29th, 1945 during the last fighing for the fortress.

Die Verleihung erfolgte für ihren freiwilligen Einsatz auf einem Hauptverbandsplatz in der Festung Küstrin. Tag und Nacht war sie trotz heftigen Artilleriebeschuß auf ihrem Posten und half unermüdlich den Schwerverwundeten. Als während eines Bombenangriffes auf die Altstadt eine Brückenwache verschüttet wurde, war sie mit als erste zur Stelle, barg trotz der weiter ringsum einschlagenden Bomben die Verwundeten, befreite die Verschütteten und sporntn durch ihr Beispiel andere bei den gefährlichen Bergungsarbeiten an.

Zwei Rote-Kreuz-Helferinnen mit dem Eisernen Kreuz ausgezeichnet.

DNB, Berlin, 22.März 1945. - Die beiden deutschen Rote-Kreuz-Helferinnen Schwester
Rhona von Ceumern und Schwester Anna Wolschütz hatten sich freiwillig zur Tätigkeit
auf einem Hauptverbandplatz der Festung Küstrin gemeldet. Tag und Nacht waren sie
trotz heftigen Artilleriebeschussses auf ihrem Posten und halfen unermüdlich den
Schwerverwundeten.

Sorry about being tardy in my response.  courlander is famous for spitting out an interesting one-liner, and , unless provoked,  letting it die.  It would be nice when he would indicate a source for further search about Latvian girl receiving military honors.

The words that caught my interest were: Latvian woman given the Iron Cross.

A name with “von” in my interpretation will not qualify as “Latvian”. Born in geographical Latvia,  unlike the colonist countries, does not make one a “Latvian”.

Of course, it does not diminish the valor of the people you mentioned. Many a Latvian Legionnaire was treated and helped by German and other nationality nurses. 

I read in Lexikon der Wehrmacht :

“Als erste Frau erhielt die Kosaken-Krankenschwester Marij Studenikowa (19 Jahre) die ‘Tapferkeits-auszeichnung’ in Bronze, im Januar 1944, für vorbildliches Verhalten in vorderster Linie der 1. Kosaken-Division.1”

Tapferkeits-auszeichnung (Ostmedallie) in Bronze, if I understand correctly, equals EK II.

There was a Norwegian nurse, her name escapes me, that received the EK II in Reval, in 1942, I believe. Allegedly she also received EK I and after the war returned to Norway to be tortured and ostracized for “supporting Nazis”.  Also after a war, the Norwegians declared all children born out of German-Norwegian liaison mentally deficient and locked them up in mental hospitals. Although there was an outcry about Norwegian inhumanity against innocent children, I believe they are still not rehabilitated. And this is one of the nations so much admired by “Latvijas Tauta”.

Danish WW II military nurses, I was told, were declared “traitors” and prosecuted for “joining the enemy”.  Denmark was the least oppressed German occupied country.  I corresponded several years ago with a Danish Army captain.  His explanation about the open brutality of Danish government against Danish anti-Bolshevik fighters, including nurses,  arose from guilty consciousness created by accepting German friendship and culture by most of the population, and not fighting the occupation as a nation. 

Well. I drifted away from my original query - Latvian girl.  Judging by the comments, other than yours ady, maybe the paramilitary girls were also Nazi criminals, same as Legionnaires with whom they served side by side.

I searched the web but still could not find courlander’s mysterious   Latvian girl.  Probably just a story thrown on forum for suckers like I.
