please can anybody give me recipes for latvian meals ? my father came to England in 1947 but never showed us any latvian meals so I would be very interested in learning now. Thankyou from Karlis Osis.

Karlis,
There is a good Latvian recipe book published a few years ago, with an English translation. It has a nice selection of traditional favourites:

Latvian national cuisine

You start with a pork chop…

Seriously, that’s like asking about “British cooking” or “American cooking”.  Can you narrow it down a bit?  What are you interested in?  Deserts?  Main courses?  Soups?  Latvians make a special cheese for midsummer.  They make bacon rolls to die for (see piragi elsewhere in this dept).  Salads are heavy on sour cream and dill.  Potatoes are everywhere.  Beets, cabbage, pig and chicken.  Think peasant Eastern European with very little spice, and you’re right.  Think haute cuisine, and that can also be gotten :)

Karli,

You might want to whet your appetite with this delicious document from the Latvian Institute.

I can vouch for the baked pork ribs, sauerkraut and the layered rye bread dessert.

Labu Apetīti!

I just tried 2 phrases in the Google:  “latvian food ”  and “latvian recipes”

Both come back with a variety of sites, recipes, photos, etc.!
