We’ve talked about Latvians on TV/in the movies.  And we’ve talked about Natalie Gulbis.  This Thursday it will be both.

Golfers Rocco Mediate, Duffy Waldorf, Natalie Gulbis to play themselves on ?CSI?
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS (CP)

NEW YORK — Golfers Rocco Mediate, Duffy Waldorf and Natalie Gulbis will play themselves in an upcoming episode of “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.”

The plot of the Jan. 21 edition of the CBS show centres on the discovery of the body of a star player during a high-profile tournament.

Mediate and Waldorf are two of the most colourful personalities on the PGA Tour. Gulbis, one of the most recognizable players in women’s golf, appeared on “Celebrity Apprentice” last season.

Thank you, Anita. I will certainly tune in to that one.  Natalie could be my long lost relative since Gulbis is my maiden name.

Thank you, Anita.  When I was in my teens I pleaded with my folks to let me just legally translate it into “Swan”.  Never happened.

I know a “Lebedev” who changed his name to “Swanson.” His son refused, kept the original family name.

And my parents knew a Janis Mednieks back in the 50s who, upon naturalization, became John Hunter.

ak, who only lets Latvians tamper with his last name.

“Say AK-47, when did you all get “ovsed”?,” queries Pete.

“All” of us got ovs-ed, I guess around 1920—but only the menfolk, of course.  Our wimmen were spared, thanks to the confluence of Latvian and Russian gramatika in the matter of feminine endings.  It has always been a source of amusement in my family that my ethnic Latvian wife is now properly called Komendantova in the Russian manner—by fiat of the Latvian Citizenship Office.

I, personally, got ovs-ed twice in my life.  First in Hersbruck, by the Latvian Orthodox Church in Exile in 1947.  Then reovs-ed in 1994 when regaining my Latvian citizenship.

Hope that clears up any Ogric confusion.

I did not know there was a Latvian Orthodox Church.  Who is your present day patriarch ?

“I did not know there was a Latvian Orthodox Church.”

It is a self-governing National Church under the Moscow Patriarchate.

Well THAT was seriously disappointing.  Not the episode as a whole, but the fact that Natalie appeared for all of 5 seconds and as many words.

Bah.

Not only are “Russians” orthodox, “pareizticigi”, but there are (or at least were when my parents grew up in Latvia) quite a large percentage of ‘pareizticigi latviesi’ residing in the Marciena, Madona areas and elsewhere.

We have the recorded version of CSI, which we’ll watch tonight and then of course, there is Edvins Snore tonight on “faux” network as Aleks says, which should be interesting.

We taped it as well and will watch it tonight. Too bad Natalie is only on for a brief moment.

Unless Natalie was the pretty blond in the party scene at the start of the show, I missed her.
