Its a complicated issue. Most people perceive the airwaves as being infinite, but the broadcast spectrum is quite finite. The cynic in me (not that it isn’t a valid issue) questions the motives of a GM of a TV station. Our viewing habits are changing. The technologies that we use to view TV are changing (smart phones, the internet, TIVO, etc.). If TV station execs are that concerned then I suggest that they find ways to boost the strength of their digital signals. I live in the center of Chicago (not exactly Podunck) and on the two TVs that use over the air antenas I am lucky if I can get most of the channels and if they don’t black out every 5 minutes or so. But that would involve cost on the part of the broadcasters, hence, my cynicism about their concerns about the broadcast spectrum. Even if it does come to pass (and unlikely at this stage since the traditional networks still have considerable political power) there are many other ways to deliver content.
