A song Festival in Milwaukee.  What memories come to mind.  I may have been 16 and it was sometime in the early 50’s.  My two girlfriends and I took a train from Chicago to Milwaukee and stayed in a
downtown hotel. First time in our lives we were away from home and totally on our own, unchaperoned.
We dressed up in our stiff formals with tons of crenoline and danced until the music stopped. My heart was swept away by one very handsome guy, the man of my dreams.  We danced to Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White and Atmina Lakatins Zilais.  My friends met dreamboats of their own. On the way back to Chicago, we could not stop talking about what a fun time we had at the Song Festival. To this day I have a soft spot for Milwaukee, even if I have never been back since.

“Memories are made of this—sweet, sweet—the memories you gave me”...I think Dean Martin sang that, I don’t know how many aeons ago.  But I certainly remember Perez Prado and-“Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White!  I used to love it!

I think we Latvians all have our memorable memories of Dziesmas Svetki!  I’ve never had the good fortune to visit Milwaukee (I hear Wisconsin is beautiful), but I remember those huge shindigs in Toronto.  Driving up with my girlfriends—seeing all these AMAZING Latvian guys everywhere—and wondering, where have THEY been where’d THEY all come from all of a sudden??!!  But even back then, amidst all the partying, shenanigans I especially loved watching the ‘tautas dejas programa’, my favorite, not to be missed, part of Dziesmas Svetki and then too, those wonderful exhibits with all the art work, jewelry…coveting all these things I really couldn’t afford…

2012 used to sound like a millennium away, but…it’s NOT, ak vai…

Happy New Year, Arija!

For those contemplating travel by air, a few words from one of the regional airlines:

Yeah, Ligita, that’s the way it “used” to be back in the days, “vecos, labos laikos”, now I find myself in a totally different league, space—but, that’s OK!

a.b.—The voice sounds familiar—maybe a Latvian, Lutheran minister we all know?!
