Rīgas 1.slimnīcā, having shared a small room with a stomache cancer patient, who died in surgery, I wondered when Latvia would come out of the Dark Ages. A decade later there seems no interest in a natural homegrown medicine that has had no fatalities in nearly five millenia of use.
Then again, (sigh)....

Everyone is so caught up in anti-Russian and pro-Latvian politics that they apparently have not noticed that there are two Latvian languages.

1.  There is the official Latvian language, the one spoken by the Saeima and the media, the one poured into concrete by the Latvian Constitution. The official version presumes to have the right to humiliate the 2nd version, as we recently saw in the humiliation of Latgalian at the swearing in ceremony of deputies at the Saeima.

2.  There is the unofficial Latvian language spoken by Latvians at home. This unofficial version is the one that I and more than likely everyone else is speaking. It is this second version that is being denied existence through economic repression and/or failure. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slavic_languages

The official Latvian language is the one that is in danger of losing its footing, because of its strong exclusionary policies. Of course, the exclusionary tactic is meant to strengthen identity, unfortunately, the very opposite is achieved.
First, the official language proves itself not capable to compete on the information level—it has to be translated every step of the way. Especially when it comes to academic institutions and scholarship.

Second, the demographics of Latvians is a disaster, the result of government policy to deconstruct Latvian sovereignty in favor of European federalism.

Third, official Latvian presumes itself to be in power, taking this power base to be Riga. However, in Riga, there is an equivalent power base for the Russian language, which is less vulnerable as a language of scholarship and as an academic language. The attitude of Riga Latvians, while understandable, is generally myopic as to the rest of Latvia, as it shares all the prejudices of urbanism vs the land as a whole.

While the Minister for Education, Mr. Ķīlis is now talking of instituting the study of English with the first grade, his club foot is that he is a Swedish born Latvian, thus possessing an urban and some other oriented psyche. For this reason, one has reason to doubt the extent of his understanding that Latvian comes in two versions, re official, and unofficial and internalized version of communication. The ground of the internalized version of Latvian is based on a version of economic existence known as natural economy or subsistence economy. The reason the Ulmanis regime remains popular among Latvians to this day is that under his government, the subsistence economy could coexist alongside a gradual acquiring of an industrial base, re VEF, Minolta, etc.

The post-Soviet Latvian government has brought havoc in the countryside, by virtually destroying any remnant of subsistence agriculture, forcing all those who depended on it to leave the country for the far abroad, where unskilled labor is in demand. There is nothing at this present time that can replace the subsistence economy, except megafarming, which favors deforestation. The only product that may be yet supportive of a subsistence economy is a product now criminalized and called marihuana. It should not be a surprise to anyone that in all the former subsistence economies, whether in Afghanistan, Mexico, and Latvia, the natives very naturally gravitate toward what I call Johns Grass.

Lately a Latvian deputy at the EU, has expressed anxiety that the depression facing Europe, will further depress the Latvian economy, because as Germany and other countries exports fall off, so will their imports from Latvia. Apparently, the deputy has not imagined that “export” can occur also in the reverse by “exporting” a product desired in other countries. This is what is behind my many years of promoting Johns Grass as a product of the Latvian countryside.
Very briefly, I propose a rejuvenation of the Latvian Johns Festival from an alcoholic debauch into a religious event. Thus, my Temple to Black Johns http://melnaysjanis.blogspot.com/  in memory of destroyed forests in Aloya novads, Latvia. The Johns Festival is an ancient tradition not only in Latvia, but since it occurs on midsummer, it is known the world over, from my place to Lake Titi Caca on the borders of Peru and Bolivia.

This and other such temples, if the growing of Johns Grass were decriminalized, could rejuvenate the countryside. For those anxious about negative effects, there always exists the possibility of putting religious organizations as overseers of the project, which they no doubt would welcome as the church as a whole is dying and with it, the “good news” it says it is here to announce. The result of decriminalization of Johns Grass in Latvia would be a reverse “export” of major proportions. Indeed, this is a dire necessity if not only the Latvian language, but Latvians remain masters of their land.

I met Barney Frank many decades ago, when he was still only a Boston politician. He came to our Stone Stoup street poets weekly discussion evening, next to the Charles Street Jail complex, and was about as straight forward as in the following link. http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2011/12/18/barney-frank-schools-george-will-paul-ryan-on-marijuana-legalization/

Sweden not interested:
(quoting John Yates)
Sweden has the harshest drug laws in Europe and they are determined that any future European drug laws should be based on the ‘Swedish Model’ rather than the ‘Dutch Model’.

Sweden is often thought of as a permissive and tolerant country and the average Swede as sophisticated and broad minded. This was true once, but Sweden has gone through a radical and unpleasant transformation over the last 20 years and is now the most intolerant and repressive country in Europe. The once famous open minded sophistication has given way to ignorant narrow minded prejudice and the average Swede is as likely to be permissive as any right wing arch conservative from the American deep south.

Keep those thoughts coming, Ikabod!
You must believe Jerry Ford was a genius.
The popular belief was that he could either walk or chew gum,
but not do both things together.
The less words one knows, the better one thinks, right?
Keep reading those books
and keep that overleaded grey matter train of yours on track.

“In Rīga, for every vote FOR the proposition, nearly 3 were Against Russian being an official language(incl. EU), de facto the referendum shows the necessity to make major steps in healing the nation-state.
I would propose to all Latvians, an immediate general amnesty (see EU accesssion agreement) for all corrupt officials (per ex-KGB after’91), in exchange for the return to constitutional law. This would send a clear message to all of Latvia’s partners, that the situation is not sliding into a Greece-Iceland (http://beforeitsnews.com/story/1787/482/Iceland_Flips_The_Bird_At_IMF,_BIS_And_World_Bank:_Vindicates_Sovereign_Currencies_And_NATIONAL_Central_Banks_-_Congratulations.html)
scenario as well a bow to the east (nuclear weapon material hotbed). The fire last week (Moscow Research Institute), could have decimated the counrty within days, having experienced the Chernobyl fallout of 1985, an immediate nuclear-free Baltic zone is imperative.”

“For all those who continue to give the Canada Corporation (Registered in the Security and Exchange Commission as a company) and their corporate entity “Health CAnada”, authority over them (in spite o
SantaC: their so-called “Constitutional Act, 1867” restrictingthe Feds to making laws in relation to"Quarantine and the Establishment and Maintenace of MArine Hospitals”.). “

Huh? Where are you getting this, and what fog are you wandering about in? The vote in Riga was 63,56% against, 36,03% for.

Vai apzinamies, kas ir noticis? Un ko tas nozīmē? Tas nozīmē tikai to, ka 21 gadu ilgajā neatkarīgas valsts pastāvēšanas laikā esam izveidojuši dziļi un bezcerīgi sašķeltu sabiedrību. Esam panākuši to, ka plaisa ir daudz lielāka nekā bija pirms 21 gada. Pret referendumā balsoja ne tikai krievi, bet arī baltkrievi, ukraiņi, ebreji, armēņi, gruzīni, tatāri, lietuvieši un poļi…
un l;ettiņi.
