I thought it was shown in Brussels, no?

The Russia Today (sort of like the BBC but from Moscow in English) already ran a lengthy “news’ piece denouncing it. Two weeks prior, RT’s “commentator” Peter Lavelle lambasted Latvia’s language law, some weeks before he was skewering (in little commentary “asides") Edward Lucas and his new book.

RT is run by Novosti, the offical state news agency, so it’s an easy way to keep tabs on what Russia is thinking about Latvia.

You are correct on Brussles. I had seen the Mar 31 article regarding it at this forum, but heard nothing further regarding any reactions or critique. The Russian reaction is no surprise - in that the official take is that the Soviet regime was okay. I saw briefly this a.m. that a torch will be arriving in Winnipeg today regarding the Ukrainian famine anniversary. The news item made brief mention that Ukrainian communties have submitted to the UN that the famine be considered a genocide. I wonder if any of those motions will ever see any real deliberation at the official level? Probably too broad a subject - and more than likely would cause some to believe this is an ethnic question. It should actually be labeled as the evaluation of an oppressive multi-national/ethnic regime.

The Soviet Story premiers on Monday, May 5, at the Cinema Riga. It’ll be shown there until, ahem, May 8.

I’m guessing it wasn’t this particular documentary then ?

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=961969716712588628&q=source:006056413283415509954&hl=en

Or is that not a documentary that they’d want aired too often?

I didn’t realize that some of the Forest Brothers were still out there fighting long after the war ended;and now...so many gone, ‘palikusi tikai dazi sirm galvi’; it was good to hear the song/melody ‘Skirsanas’ played on the kokle, zither(?) couldn’t tell… an old song my father used to sing and that I picked up from him.

Plus the added bonus of ‘Lacplesis’ (Bear Slayer) and ‘Ardievu Divdesmitai G’ all on the same Youtube page.  Thanks, Speedkuff!

PS Aleks--glad to see your site is up and running again!

Hi everybody, I’m from Lithuania and I have just read an article about this movie. I thought it would be wonderful if they screened the movie here, in Lithuania. However, I’m not sure they’re gonna do it. Regardless the fact, I decided to watch it at any case, so I’m considering of coming to Latvia for one day :) So I would be very grateful if you could give me some information on the showtimes, ticket prices and theatres. Thank you! :)

In the propaganda war over what really happened during World War II, The Soviet Story is a powerful weapon of mass instruction.

The film’s producers are now trying to acquire the license rights to distribute this film beyond the EU, show it in theatres and sell DVD’s. This will require some cash (between 15,000-20,000 euros), primarily to cover fees for all the archival material used. We are trying to help them raise the money. Interest in this film is high, thanks to Ed Lucas and his wonderful story in the Economist. As soon as the licensing is settled, the film will be available for mass distribution. In a few weeks the LI (and others here) will have promotional DVDs of the film for private, non-commercial viewing.

Those who are interested (in either acquiring a promo DVD or in raising money for expanded distribution) can contact me at the LI. We won’t be able to mail it, but if you are in Riga, you can come to the LI offices (Kalku iela 7, 4th floor) to get a copy. We should have it by mid-June.

The Soviet Story is a powerful weapon of mass instruction.

Ha, ha, ha. And as a person lying about WMDs in Iraq and advocating invasion (something you refused to acknowledge even when this was your line), making this little joke makes you far more repulsive than you were to begin with. It is people like you who run “mass instruction,” yes. Many die because of what a shallow little liar you are. Latvians included.
