Latvia has a national women’s hockey team.  In the world hockey federation, the team is in Division I.
Division I championships will (once again) be in Latvia this Feb-March.  Last year they were in Nikko, Japan.

Stay tuned!....

I’m glad to see this post and hope Ojars Kalnins and others who previously enthusiastically embraced the idea of furthering a positive Latvian image in the world through the success of Latvians in sports (mentioned were male basketball, hockey players in the U.S.) will also think to include the many successful Latvian female athletes and start popularizing their names and giving press to their athletic accomplishments among not only trimda Latvians but also to the big sports-crazy world.

Who was just recently voted the best female basketball player in the European women’s basketball league?  (Maybe a Latvia Latvian can provide us with more details and information.)

Who is the most successful Latvian (male or female) marathon runner?  Is this woman a popular sports star in Latvia among all Latvians?

Are women’s sports teams popular in Latvia and do they have a big following?

Is there much integration among the players?  Are foreign female athletes recruited, as they are for male teams, and what language is used for communication?  (I surprisingly met and briefly spoke with U.S. black male basketball players from Grand Rapids, Michigan, while travelling by bus from Riga to Vilnius.)

Also, I have read in Latvian newspapers, the problem in male sports, that many outstanding Latvian/Russian players can’t communicate in Latvian and Latvian-speaking coaches and Latvian-speaking players tolerate this for the succcess of the team. Is this a big issue for female teams also?
