As far as I can tell, the only psychological defect within cooee is in those who can’t respect their fellow human beings.

Ivar’s pulling some OZ speak:
An expression “within cooee of” has developed. It means “not far from”, and seems to be confined to New Zealand and Australian English.

I suppose this is in regards of lifestyle options.......................LOL

Bruno thinks that its worth repeating what Seskis posted a while ago.

It is worth repeating what Seskis posted a while ago:

Not really.

“ Homosexuality is a psychological defect,...

Let’s see.
The American Psychiatric Association doesn’t consider it a defect.
The American Psychological Association doesn’t consider it a defect.
Most psychiatrists and psychologists around the world no longer consider it a defect.
You’ll have to forgive me if I don’t take Seskis word for it.

… like a clubfoot is a physiological defect. Whilw the possessor of a clubfoot deserves our sympathy it is nothing to be proud of.  If a cripple places his clubbed foot in front of me, tells me he is proud of it, and then asks me to admire it, then there is no way I can help avoid laughing. “

Let’s assume the above is true and think about it for a moment.

As far as I know no one is preventing clubfoots from marrying. No one is accussing clubfoots of choosing to be clubfoots. No one is asking clubfoots to tough it out and walk straight. While I doubt that any clubfoot would ask someone to admire their clubfoot, I think most people would cringe if someone were to ask clubfoots to keep themselves confined to their homes because that someone finds clubfootness offensive.

And to be truthful, no matter what Seskis writes there is no way I can help avoid laughing. I think he has a defect.

I believe that what Andrejs has written on the topic (immediately above) pretty well sums up my feelings on this, and he has written far more eloquently than I ever could.

While I am not convinced that gayness is a 100% genetic thing, I know very well that it is not a lifestyle choice. I can only echo what others have written here - if you’re in any doubt about this, talk to some gay people and they will clear up this point for you.

What mystifies me greatly is why in this year of 2007 (after how many decades since the Stonewall event?) there are still people who don’t believe that gays deserve just as much respect as every other person. Surely the message would have penetrated the thickest skull by now?

Clearly not, if the Latvian experience is anything to go by.....

As to those who believe that it is un-Latvian and that “there never were gay Latvians"in the good old days”, dig deeper and you will find that that never was the case. Because whether one is talking about Latvia, Australia, England, USA or anywhere, gays were forced to stay underground in the face of oppressive, and often draconian, laws.

Ivar`
Well, well, well....................there is a gay gene after all.
I met one yesterday. Gene B*&%, to be exact.
He told me that he uses the gay angle for job
security. The State wouldn’t dare to fire a gay dude.
He also told me that most journalists in states
have a stupid gene.....................
