Ancient Latvian gods and goddesses ?

Care should taken that in the process of translation concepts are not introduced that do not exist in the origin language.  Lately I have come across a number of articles in english about ancient latvian beliefs.  This is laudable, provided care is taken in the translations.  In latvian sources , the dainas, gods and goddesses,(dievi un dievietes) are not mentioned.  God and Gods children, sons and daughters , are mentioned.  There are no ancient latvian gods and goddesses, and therefore should not appear in the translations.

I would like to expound on the above that I posted a couple of years ago.  Some who decide to study the dainas start with the preconceived idea that latvian gods and goddesses are mentioned, and what is left to do, is to describe and catalogue them.
Then they come across the hundreds of “mothers” (Meža Māte etc.} mentioned, and declare that hundreds of goddesses are worshipped.  In fact, the talk here is about “Mother” as the guardian and protector not a goddess.  To the ancients a guardian mother made more sense than a winged guardian angel flying around , or a patron saint.

Consider the following:  When “Mother Earth” is mentioned everybody understands what is meant.  Mother Earth is real. Mother Earth exists. You are standing on Mother Earth.  Mother Earth is not a goddess sitting somewhere on a celestial throne.

From dainas:  God is the Creator, and all the mothers mentioned, just like the mothers everywhere today and in the past, give birth, nurture, guard and protect, all His creations.

I agree, care should be taken.

If you study American Indian mythology/ spirituality, you will come across the phrase Earth Mother.  In latvian - Zemes mate.  There are so many similarities between old, old pre-christian religions.

Mother Earth?

Care should be taken? So what? we don’t screw up the message?

You are wasting your life on this trivial nonsense. There is no Mate Latvia or zemes mate.

You really need to examine your personal plane of existance to realize this is nothing more than a fantasy, and there is a better world beyond the constraints of Latvian self inflicted bondage to heritage.

Perhaps Ikabods has personal proof that nothing else exists??? Surely there were never any other gods ever - right? Because there were none - I guess there are no other possibilities for anything else. The world was created in 6 days right ? That is the word of God - according to the bible - isn’t it?

If no other deities existed - how does Ikabod explain the devil?

Sniks, a searcher of truth… I thank the Lord for your thoughts.

“Perhaps Ikabods has personal proof that nothing else exists??? Surely there were never any other gods ever - right? “Perhaps Ikabods has personal proof that nothing else exists??? “ I have my faith that that nothing else exists but Jesus, the Father God and the Holy Spirit. I have fond the proof in my personal life, my day to day existance. Can I offer you this proof uther than my testimony? Of course not, each life i made precious and holy for it’s own purpose.

Ancient Latvians had God’s sons (Dieva dēli) going around in Heave, courting the daugters of the Sun (Saules meitas).  Where is the mother of God’s sons, and where is the father of Sun’s daughters?  I hope there is not an incestuous relationship going on!!!
