This may sound strange - but there seems to to be inconsitancy when it comes to certains aspects of decscribing intimacy in Latvian. I am not talking profanity of course - and not about mild flirtation. The inconsistancy is that there are those that seem to maintain that a couple will creat their own words for how they interact - and indeed express their desires. Have I been fed a load of rubbish here - or is it true to a certain degree. I naturally did learn enough words about expressing love etc - but not really anything further. I had always thought that this was simply because there was no one my age here that I needed to learn it for. I hope you follow me on this one? In short - do Latvian couple make up their own words to describe their private romantitics?

I’m not quite sure what you mean?  That Latvians don’t have a lot of “explicit” terms when it comes to intimacy as opposed to say, ‘Amerikani’, other nationalities?  Sorry, Snik, you’re gonna have to get more “explicit” here or just keep me guessing, heh, heh!

It was very early in the morning when I read your post Snik, just to let you know, so I hope I didn’t embarrass you--didn’t mean to put you on the spot.  Maybe if you could give me (us) some examples?

Nothing speaks more metaphorically to intimacy for Latvians than the classic, “Neratnas tautas dziesmas, miklas, sakamvardi un parunas” ( Naughty folk songs, guessing games, folk sayings, expressions). Printed in Copenhagen by Imanta, 1953, linen hardcover, 330 pages.

Guess where it is and you win a new car! (a Matchbox Ferrari, that is)

That’s the magic of Latvian--you can have the most mischevious folk song that talks about yawning squirrels and it all seems so innocent.  How about a few thousand of those? Learn anatomical Latvian, jargon too!

Make an offer! All books are donated and all donations go to upkeep Saulaine!

Sorry - hadn’t gotten back to this one. Like I said - I didn’t really need to learn any of this early on - and wouldn’t know what words to look up at times. It is also a much broader topic than I initially thought - depending on how yoy read it. Please forgive any Latvian spelling mistakes. I still speak - read okay if given the time - and tend to have a great deal of problems with writing.

I know that “maigoties” is necking. If someone is feeling particularly amourous - how would that be described. For arranging a get together with some one - are there terms other than asking that individual if you came “apciemot” them later. Again - I am not looking for profanities. I know those - and isn’t it odd that in any language - that an individual seems to learn profanities easier than the proper form of the language. I guess people simply prefer swearing to learning or teaching at times.

Ok, first of all read ‘neratnas dainas at http://www.dainuskapis.lv (or http://www.dainuskapis.lv/k.php?in= and click on the last catalog entry).  Lots of educational material there, but kind of old fashioned.

When I was younger, an elderly woman told me “Ja man kads puisis patika, es vinam devu.” At first I didn’t realize that was the end of the sentence - the meaning is that if I liked a fellow I gave him some (= he got lucky that night!).

If “ maigoties “ is effective, then “mileties” is the pleasant activity later on.

There is so much about this on the internet, in latvian.  Google the word <mileties> or the 2 words <mileties bauda> and you will find more than you can read in 1 night.

As for “cukurdupsis” = “sugar butt” , don’t call her that in public.

As per TRIS NO PARDAUGAVAS:
(Sung to Jingle Bells)

Nekaujies, milejies
Tad Tev labak ies!
Lauj matiem, bardai paaugties
Ar krellem rotajies.

Nekaujies, milejies,
Tad Tev labak ies!
Bet, ja Tu gribi bucoties,
Tad pirti noperies!

Hmmmmm.....

Read latvian poetry about love.  Poems by Arija Elksne and many others.
Google the phrase <dzeja par milestibu> and again, you will find many lovely phrases to make your own.

Kristine - I remember that!  And still laugh!
