We just found out recently that we are moving to Lima (Peru) in the summer of 2007.  We have not found any Latvians here in Colombia, although we understand there’s a fairly active community next door in Venezuela.  Just wondering if anyone knows if there’s a Latvian (Lithuanian or Estonian) community in Peru?  We’d love to have someone to celebrate Jani with, etc.

Lima now??  Taking into consideration the Latvia-Colombia jump, I’d have thought you’d wind up in… I don’t know… Reykjavik.  Or Ulan Bator, or something.  This is almost… sensible!

Hope you enjoy the new surroundings!

We were hoping to be somewhere like Ulaan Batar...ah well. :-) You are welcome to write and arrange a visit to Lima.  I still hope there may be those among my Latvian friends who dream of seeing Machu Piccu.

I think the new devious plan is to move us further and further from our daughter in the UK. Although the good news is there are actually direct flights from Lima to Glasgow, which there are not from Bogota.

Heh, Latvians On Line advertising people seem to be right on the job… as I type this, there’s an advertisement for Peru tourism below!

But I actually didn’t address your original question - I’ve never heard of any Latvians in Peru.  I personally knew a family in Chile, and of course there are the communities in Venezuela and Argentina… alas, you’re hitting the OTHER large countries in South America!

Good luck! (And if I win the lottery, we’ll do Machu Picchu)

Sorry McT, there are organized Lithuanian communities in Venezuela, Uruguay, Brazil and Columbia - but nothing in Peru that I can find.

It would appear that there are other attractions in Peru besides Machu Picchu:

Yes, Vidas, we have a few “Lithuanian” friends here.  And the former mayor and a very popular political figure is Antanas Mockus, son of Lithuanian immigrants to Colombia.  He regularly wears a tie made of Lithuanian folk weaving.  Interesting, bit crazy, man.  But noone who is very in touch with their baltic roots, unfortunately.

I too have found no evidence of anything baltic in Peru...although it’s a more cosmopolitan place, so perhaps when we get there we’ll find someone.

Sorry, AB, but I get nothing when I click on your link.  What was the article about?

Mockus came to visit the Chicago Lithuanian community a couple years ago after our local paper declared him Lithuanian of the Year.

I missed the event - but by all accounts he’s a character. It was rumored that he wanted to present himself as a possible candidate for Mayor of Vilnius - but it appears that Vilnius wont benefit from the election of the Super Citizen.
