To replace blogs, spams, čats?

Janīna Kursīte, who recently published a vārdene, has a fine article on our imperiled language and possible strategies for its resuscitation in Diena --

The article considers the effects of contemporary materialist culture/
politics on language and culture here—for example, the threat to
the Suiti, who have 500 years of distinct development in Courland
(their Catholicism, their Tahmian dialect, etc.), but whose region
will now be divided between different districts, partly because the
Gudenieki hope for 22 km of paved road in one district and Alsunga
will be joined to Kuldîga against its will.

Here you can listen to the Suitu sievas --

As Kursīte writes, in our day language begins to swing in the air,
divorced from its roots.

The piece ends with determination in despair—she speaks of the
Ukrainian linguist Beata Besiadovska and her family, who moved to
Ilūkste (across the river from me, in Selonia), and sent their
children to Latvian school. Why would you do this, when Latvian will
die out by 2016, the neighbors said. Perhaps it will, was the answer
-- but at least my children will speak it.
