Hi,

My 9 yr old son is working on a school project about his heritage. He needs to include a Latvian tradition w/3 details about that tradition. Can anyone provide info on such? My dad passed away years ago and I have been unable to locate my uncle. Thank you in advance for any help!

Was wondering if anyone had any notes, references or links to sites with a complete list of Latvian festivals throughout the year; information on traditions; and sayings/beliefs.

Hi, I’m just wondering if anybody has a recipe for those tasty meatballs (spelled Cotlettes, I think)? I’ve had them several times, but never got a chance to jot down a recipe for them.

Asterix comic in Latvian

Hi to everybody,
I’m Raffaele from Italy.
I am a new user; I’m glad in meeting you all!
I’m posting in your interesting forum as I hope you can help me…
I’m collecting Asterix (famous French/Gaul comic character) in foreign languages.
I’m still missing the Latvian translation and from my country it’s really hard to find it.
Four titles were printed in 1994-96 by Egmont Latvia Ltd. (Riga)
The titles are:
1. Galla Asterika Dekas (1994)
2. Zelta Sirpis (1994)
3. Asteriks un Kleopatra (1995)
4. Asteriks Korsika (1996)
These comics were translated by Gita Grinsberga.
These are all the informations I have.
I really really hope that you can help me in finding and buying it.
Or at least if noboby of you owns these comics, please suggest me where I could find it…

Latvian “s’mores”

Thought I’d share the results of our recent attempts at making “Latvian S’mores”.

For those unfamiliar with this popular N. American sweet treat, a “s’more” consists of a campfire-roasted marshmallow on top of a piece of milk chocolate, sandwiched between 2 graham crackers. Sweet, sticky mess…

Our local ingredients consisted of:
Laimas zefīrs (krējuma, bez šokolādes apvalciņa)
Laimas piena šokolāde
Laimas Selgas Klasiskie cepumi (sviesta un vaniļas garša)

Our (unscientific ;-) findings - zefirs melted ok, next time we’ll try with vanilla flavored zefīri as the krējuma ones were a bit sour (lemony?). The chocolate was fine. Selgas klasiskie are sweeter than graham crackers, but it sort of balanced out the sour zefirs. So....in a pinch (or if you haven’t made it to Stockman, where marshmallows ARE available, albeit at a ridiculous price), if you’re dying for a s’more, the Latvian version is not so bad.

Children’s Television Programs on DVD?

I am trying to find DVDs of Latvian children’s television programs to show my sons, ages 5 and 2. They need not be programs designed to teach Latvian to an English-speaking audience; copies of cartoons or other age-appropriate programs Latvian children watch would be fine. Does anyone know the names of popular Latvian childrens shows and if so, how and where to purchase copies? Thank you for your input.
