Tomēr atmiņā stāv moments no skolas Ņujorkā.

With or without having obtained elementary latviešu izglītību ārzemēs, I did not want to let this subject slide by, have any of you provided Latvian education for your kids at higher grade levels? The other day I was reading the July issue of Scientific American, a popular science magazine that I’ve have been reading since the 1950s. As I passed page 34 on the adjacent page I was surprised to run across a title “It’s Time to Look at Latvia.” It was a full-page ad in the special advertising section and not only that; there were a total of four full pages! I thought to myself, this must be Latvian Power! It’s a good start in introducing Latvia and education in Latvia to the English-speaking world, although I would rate the ad an overall 6 out of 10 for effectiveness. The advertisement needed sharper teeth to create interest and while being current in technology it could have skipped the dark ages. It most likely cost a bundle and that’s where it is important to blow the reader’s socks off in order to get the mileage and make it count. Of course, like educational institutions in many other countries this is competitive business with the objective of attracting clientele to fill the seats. What can Latvia deliver?

The first page was dedicated to Latvia and its history of scientific accomplishments. Dr. Tatjana Koķe, Minister of Education and Science, signed off on this ad. The ad starts off with:

In Latvia, smart PEOPLE are our greatest national resource.
Useful KNOWLEDGE is our most important commodity.
Higher EDUCATION is our most powerful tool.
Innovative RESEARCH is one of our best success stories.

I’ve seen some advertising boners by USA universities so I will hold back my full critique of this ad.

It continues with “The country that gave James Bond his camera” and then reminisces about the good old historical times and some noteworthy players from the by-gone days before the war and even before both wars. The page is very busy and there are plenty of motherhood statements.

Pages 2 and 3 cover, in broad terms, the various science and technical programs offered by University of Latvia (http://www.lu.lv) that will be taught in English. These include: Environment, Paleontology, Linguistics, Astronomy, Computer Science, Physics (Atomic, Molecular and Optical – http://www.lasercentre.lv), Material Physics(http://www.cfi.lv), Photonics (http://www.lanet.lv/~asi), Magnetohydrodynamics (http://www.mhd.sal.lv), Material Sciences (http://www.pmi.lv), and Nanotechnologies (http://www.kfi.lu.lv).

Page 4 presents Riga Technical University (http://www.rtu.lv) that offers programs in Civil Engineering, Materials Science and Applied Chemistry, Power and Electrical Engineering, Transport and Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science and Information Technology, Electronics and Telecommunications, Architecture and Urban Planning, and Engineering Economics.

Whether you succeeded or failed to teach your children Latvian while they were growing up, there is learning continuity and there is a second chance. Here’s the point I am making, while this promotion is being targeted for English speaking potential students it is and excellent opportunity for Latvian students who do or especially do not speak Latvian to return to their roots. Without missing a beat they can study in English to earn their degree and at the same time while living in Latvia pick up the Latvian language and bond with the Latvian culture they would otherwise miss out on. I believe that the tuition in Latvian institutions of higher learning is attractive.

I do not know whether they provide English for none technical programs, but it is worth asking.

Were any of you LOL readers aware of this opportunity for your young people, and even for yourself, to earn their technical degrees in Latvia while taking the courses in English?

Cheers, Ivars
