The Queensland Latvian Lutheran congregation’s annual Harvest Festival begins at 13:00 hours Oct, 4 at the Latvian House, 24 Church Court, Buranda. The festival will include a lottery and bazaar. Please bring food or drink to share.

Harvest Festival at Long Island Latvian Church

The annual Harvest Festival church service will take place at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 5 at the Latvian Ev. Lutheran Church, 4 Riga Lane, Melville. A celebration with Latvian style foods and desserts, a raffle drawing, and a performance by the Long Island Latvian theater group will follow in the church social hall. Harvest Festival (Pļaujas svētki) is scheduled following the 11 a.m. service Oct. 5 in the United Latvian Ev. Lutheran Church of Cleveland, 1385 Andrews Ave., Lakewood. A cold buffet will be available. The event is organized by the church’s Ladies Committee.

Seniors program set in Sydney

A program for senior citizens begins at noon Oct. 10 in the Sydney Latvian House, 32-34 Parnell St., Strathfield. On the program is a presentation by Juris Zemītis about the Web site dpalbums.lv, as well as a video about the Latvian Song and Dance Celebration.

Muzikālais teātris 7 performs in Minneapolis

The Rīga-based Muzikālais teātris 7 performs the A. R. Gurney play “Mīlestības vēstules” (Love Letters) at 7 p.m. Oct. 10 in the Latvian Ev.-Lutheran Church of Minneapolis and St. Paul, 3152 17th Ave. S., Minneapolis. Acting in the play’s two roles are Mirdza Martinsone un Juris Kalniņš. The performance is organized by the Latvian Organization Association of Minnesota and the folk ensemble Teiksma.

Klubs Kaladū

The organizers of the 52nd Australian Latvian Arts Festival in Sydney will hold a warm-up celebration and fundraiser for the festival beginning at 19:30 hours Oct. 18 in the Sydney Latvian House, 32 Parnell Street, Strathfield. At this event—called “Klubs Kaladū” after the common Christmas song refrain—local Latvian musicians will lead guests on a musical journey from Līvāni to Louisiana and anywhere inbetween, but all the while staying in a cozy nightclub atmosphere. Jukka Rislakki book signing

A discussion about Jukka Rislakki’s book, The Case for Latvia – Disinformation Campaigns Against a Small Nation: Fourteen Hard Questions and Straight Answers about a Baltic Country will be held at 6 p.m. Oct. 23, at the Embassy of Latvia, 2306 Massachusetts Ave. NW, Washington. Rislakki, a journalist and Baltic correspondent from 1990-2001, will be on hand to sign books. He currently lives and works as a freelance writer in Jūrmala, Latvia. In his book Rislakki examines recent charges and accusations about Latvia and Latvians and provides an outline of the country’s recent history while attempting to separate documented historical fact from misinformation and deliberate disinformation. His analysis helps to explain why the Baltic States (population 7 million) consistently top the enemy lists in public opinion polls of Russia (143 million). Latvian cellist Marta Sudraba performs with the Ulster Orchestra at 8 p.m. Oct. 24 in St. Peter’s Church of Ireland, Peter Street, Drogheda. The concert is part of the Temenos 08 music festival.
