Events for September 2008

In the traditional Latvian calendar, September is silu mēnesis. Sept. 29 for ancient Latvians was Miķeli, also known as Apjumības. Coming shortly after the autumnal equinox, Miķeli was a time to mark the completion of the harvest. In modern Latvia, many communities organize a Miķeltirgus (Miķelis Fair) to celebrate.

No official holidays or commemorations are on Latvia's calendar during September, but Sept. 1 is the start of the school year and cause for celebration. Students get dressed up to meet teachers, often bringing them flowers. In many schools, the day is marked with various activities.

In the diaspora, the founding of the University of Latvia in 1919 is marked in many communities with a commemorative event close to Sept. 28, the actual date the educational institution began.
