Events for August 2008

In the traditional Latvian calendar, August is rudzu mēnesis (the month of rye). Aug. 7 for ancient Latvians was Māras diena (Māra's Day) and signaled the end of summer. Harvest time was soon to follow.

On Latvia's official calendar, Aug. 11 commemorates Latvia's freedom fighters, marking the day in 1920 when the new nation signed a peace treaty with the Soviet Union, ending the War of Liberation. Aug. 21 marks the day in 1991 when Latvia's parliament restored the pre-war constitution.

In the diaspora, in the Northern Hemisphere, August also sees the resurgence of local community activity. Those who were at camp or summer high schools, or who traveled to Latvia for the summer, are now back in town. It's time to start thinking about sending the kids back to Latvian school. In Australia and the rest of the Southern Hemisphere, winter comes to an end in August.
