United Kingdom Family Day at Rowfant HouseA summer Family Day event begins at 10:30 a.m. June 8 at Rowfant House, Wallage Lane, Rowfant, Crawley. A church service for children is scheduled at 11 a.m. Activities for children start at 11:30 a.m. and include arts, crafts and athletics. Belgium ‘Škroderdienas Silmačos,’ then Jāņi in Grez-DoiceauLatvians in Belgium are invited to celebrate Jāni with two events June 21. The Brussels Latvian Theater will perform the classic Rūdolfs Blaumanis play “Skroderdienas Silmačos” at 15:00 hours in the offices of the Latvian Permanent Representative to the European Union, avenue des Arts 23, Brussels. Afterward, a bus will leave at 18:30 hours for a meadow near Grez-Doiceau for līgo celebrations together with Lithuanians in Belgium. A large tent will provide shelter in the meadow, but participants may also bring their own tents. The folklore ensemble Madaviņa from Latvia will provide live music. The bus will return to Brussels at 1:30 hours June 22. Admission is EUR 8 if paid in advance or EUR 10 on the day of the event. Massachusetts Exhibit features artwork by PuriņšIllustrations, painting and mixed media by artist Ansis Puriņš are part of the exhibit “Ink & Steel” running June 27-July 18 at SPACE 242, 242 E. Berkeley St., 2nd floor, Boston. This is the first full exhibit by cartoonist and illustrator Puriņš in nearly a decade. His work may be described as “kitsch horrific,” according to the gallery. Work by Puriņš has been published in newspapers and magazines. In 2007 he won Print Magazine‘s Regional Design Award. He self-publishes the comics Zombre, Gnome Gathering and Duppy. Indiana Multiethnic Midsummer in IndianapolisThe Latvian, Estonian, Lithuanian, Polish, Scottish and Swedish societies of Indiana host a Midsummer celebration in the afternoon and evening of June 28 at the Latvian Community Center, 1008 W. 64th St., Indianapolis. Events include Scottish and Estonian games, tug-of-war, corn hole, bocce ball, basketball, a children’s balloon bounce, and flower and oak leaf crown making. Traditional Latvian food will be avalable. Latvian items, including jewelry, will be for sale. A campfire and singing are planned as well. Participants should bring lawn chairs.
