Men’s chorus concert

The Sydney Latvian Men’s Chorus will perform a concert titled Mūsu dziesma (Our Song) at 13:00 hours May 4 in the Sydney Latvian House, 32 Parnell St., Strathfield.

District of Columbia

“Rīgas sargi” at the Avalon

The feature film Rīgas sargi will be screened at 2 p.m. May 4 at the Avalon Theatre, 5612 Connecticut Ave. N.W. (between McKinley and Northampton streets). Directed by Aigars Graube, Rīgas sargi was filmed in Latvia and is a dramatized account of events in November 1919 during Latvia’s War of Independence which followed the end of the First World War. The full-length movie premiered on Nov. 11, 2007, and has been seen by more than 140,000 people, thus making it the most popular Latvian movie since Latvia regained its independence in 1991. It is shown in Latvian with English subtitles. Tickets are USD 12-15, free for Latvian school students.

Experience the song festival in Australia

The United Australian Latvian Chorus invites all to attend its dress rehearsal for this summer’s song festival in Riga at 14:00 hours May 4 in the Latvian House, 3 Dickens St., Elwood. The choir will sing songs from the repertoire of the festival’s final concert, which draws more than 10,000 singers. Similar pre-festival concerts will also take place on May 4 throughout Latvia. Tea, wine and beer will be available, as will good company for lovers of singing. Admission by donation.

Brālīši perform in Limerick

The group Brālīši from Madona, Latvia, performs at 20:00 hours May 4 in Scott’s Bar & Restaurant, Ashdown Student Village, Courtbrack Avenue, Limerick. Admission is EUR 15 and includes a smorgasbord.

Vīķe-Freiberga to speak at Harvard

Former Latvian president and visiting fellow of the Harvard Institute of Politics Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga will speak at 2:15 p.m. May 8 in the Garden Room at the Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies, 27 Kirkland St. at Cabot Way, Cambridge. The theme of her speech will be “The Road from the USSR to EU and NATO Membership: Latvia’s Success Story”. This event is open to the public. “Rīgas sargi” in Boston

The hit historical drama Rīgas sargi will be screened at 10 a.m. May 10 in the Circle Cinema, 399 Chestnut Hill Ave., Brighton. The film is in Latvian with English subtitles. Directed by Aigars Grauba, the movie depicts events in November 1919 when in the aftermath of the First World War a part of the defeated German army still based in the newly independent Latvia regrouped under General Rüdiger von der Goltz. The rogue general ordered an attack on Rīga, but the vastly outnumbered Latvian beat back the Germans. Reserve tickets in advance by calling Marcis Voldiņš at +1 (617) 969-2310. The screening is sponsored by the American Latvian National Association and the Latvian Welfare Assocation “Daugavas Vanagi.”

The Melbourne Latvian School “Daugava” hosts a celebration for mothers and families at 13:00 hours May 10 in the Latvian Retirement Village, 60 Fraser Crescent, Wantirna South.

Wisconsin

‘Horse holiday’ at Dievsēta

Ūsiņš is the traditional Latvian patron of horses, who will be honored at the Ūsiņi celebration May 10-11 at Dievsēta, 19264 Bittersweet Ave., Warrens. This is the time when young men took their horses out to pasture overnight for the first time after the long winter, and the folks at Dievsēta accordingly spend this evening outdoors, cooking a traditional egg dish over a campfire. Plan to arrive earlier in the day Saturday and stay until Sunday. Those who wish are invited to help in cleaning up the Dievsēta yard and do other small jobs that have piled up over the winter. The Danish-Latvian Association is organizing its annual meeting along with an excursion on May 17 at Labyrinthia, Gl. Ryvej 2, Rodelund, Silkeborg Syd, Them. Learn about the history of the labyrinth park beginning at 10:00 hous. The Danish-Latvian Association meeting will begin at 11:00 hours. Saulaine Spring Festival

The sixth annual Saulaine Spring Festival will take place 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 24 at Camp Saulaine, 5813 20th Sideroad, Utopia (one hour north of Toronto). The festival will take place rain or shine. Rehearsals for West Coast festival

In preparation for the West Coast Latvian Song Festival, rehearsals for choirs and folk dance ensembles are scheduled May 24-25 in the Latvian Community Center, 1955 Riverside Drive, Los Angeles, and the Latvian Ev. Lutheran Church of Southern California, 1927 Riverside Drive, Los Angeles. Rehearsals run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on May 24. Folk dance ensembles will rehearse May 25 from 9:30 a.m. to noon and from 2-4 p.m., while choirs will rehearse just from 2-4 p.m.

Detlef Zoo in Liverpool

Latvian rock band Detlef Zoo performs as part of the “Hijack Records & Friends Showcase” beginning at 5:15 p.m. May 24 in The Cavern Club, 10 Mathew St., Liverpool. The band’s set is part of the International Pop Overthrow concert tour. Detlef Zoo actually is scheduled to take the stage early the next morning, at 12:45 a.m. May 25. Spring concert in the Catskills

The New York Latvian Chorus and the Latvian chorus Atbalss from Montreal will perform in concert at 3 p.m. May 25 at the Latvian Lutheran Camp near Tannersville. On the program are works by Aldonis Kalniņš and songs from the repertoire of the song festival in Rīga this summer. Guest conductor will be Ivars Cinkuss from Latvia. Drinks and snacks will be available before the concert. Admission is USD 20, but for students, USD 10. Children ages 13 and under get in free. Dinner, singing and dancing will follow the concert. 2x2 seminar

Canceled: Organizers have cancelled a week-long 2x2 seminar for Latvian youth ages 18-30 planned May 29-June 6 at the Miracle Camp Retreat Center, 25281 80th Ave., Lawton. The seminar was to include a selection of lecture-oriented topics and hands-on projects, many led by well-known members of the Latvian community. Among topics planned are culture, psychology, Latvia today, journalism, music and living in Latvia. Among projects are Latvian cuisine, folk dancing and ceramics. Cost of the seminar is USD 450. AABS conference in Bloomington

The 21st Conference on Baltic Studies, hosted by the Association for the Advancement of Baltic Studies (AABS), will take place from May 29 to June 1 at Indiana University in Bloomington.
