Discussion examines history

The Latvian Society in Belgium and European Parliament M.P. Rihards Pīks present a discussion evening, “Meklējot vēstures varoņus: Otrā pasaules kara izpratne mūsdienu Latvijā un Eiropā,” beginning at 18:30 hours April 2 in the Latvian Representative Office to the European Union, 23 avenue des Arts, Brussels. The discussion will be led by Anda Catlaka. Admission is EUR 5, but students and members of the society will be admitted free. Registration is required by e-mailing .

Ireland

Saxophone quarter, piano trio perform in Dublin

The Rīga Saxophone Quartet and the RIX Piano Trio perform at 13:05 hours April 5 in the Shaw Room of the National Gallery of Ireland, Merrion Square West and Clare Street, Dublin. The Riga Saxophone Quartet was founded in 1992. It includes Gints Pabērzs (soprano saxophone), Artis Sīmanis (alto saxophone), Ainars Šablovskis (tenor saxophone) and Arvydas Kazlauskas (baritone saxophone). The RIX Piano Trio is part of the RIX Piano Quartet. Its members include Jānis Maļeckis (piano), Sandis Šteinbergs (violin) and Reinis Birznieks (cello). The concert is part of the “Saturday Lunchtime Concerts” series organized by the Royal Irish Academy of Music. Tickets are EUR 5 and will be available at the door.

eLVe, Cór Mhaigheo in concert

Cór Mhaigheo, formerly known as Mayo County Choir, and the Dublin-based Latvian immigrant choir eLVe perform at 8:30 p.m. April 5 in the Town Hall Theatre, Kiltimagh. Tickets for the concert, priced at EUR 5 and EUR 10, will be available at the door.

Documentary examines Soviet role in Holocaust

The premiere of The Soviet Story, a documentary film directed by Edvīns Šnore of Latvia, is scheduled at 18:00 hours April 9 in Room 5B001 in the Paul-Henri Spaak Building, European Parliament, rue Wiertz 60, Brussels. The films claims “the Soviet Union helped Nazi Germany instigate the Holocaust,” according to the film’s Web site, sovietstory.com.

Theater festival in Sydney

The 48th Sydney Latvian Theater Festival takes place on April 12-13 at the Sydney Latvian House, 32 Parnell St., Strathfield. The Melbourne Latvian Theater’s adaptation of R. Harwood’s comedy “The Quartet,” directed by Gunārs Klauss, begins at 15:00 hours April 12. “Raibie baloni”—a series of humorous vignettes arranged by Jānis Čečiņš—will follow the play. On April 13, the Sydney Latvian Theater will perform two one-act plays directed by Ilona Brūvere, Angela Betzien’s “Pašpuikas” (Hoods) and Andris Zeibots’ comedy “Prokrusts. The one-acts begin at 13:00 hours.

Marta Sudraba cello concert

Cellist Marta Sudraba from Latvia, accompanied by pianist Larissa Schneider, performs at 20:00 hours April 14 in Elder Hall, North Terrace, Univeristy of Adelaide, Adelaide. The concert is part of the Adelaide International Cello Festival, which combines master classes and public concerts by cellists, and for which the artistic director is Latvian-Australian cellist Jānis Laurs. Children’s groups perform in Denmark

Cielaviņa and Spice, two children’s pop music groups from Ludza, Latvia, will perform in Denmark from April 16-20. Their first concert will begin at 19:00 hours April 16 in the small hall at Bygningen, Ved Anlæget 14B, Vejle. At 14:00 hours April 18 they will perform near the Falck Fire Brigade at Legoland, Bilund. At 17:00 hours April 19 they will perform at the Lokalhistorisk Bibliotek, Klosterbakken 2, Odense. Apvedceļš in concert

Organizers have canceled a planned three-day tour of England by the popular country group Apvedceļš from Latvia. The band was to play in Bradford, Wisbech and the Straumēni rest home in Catthorpe from April 18-20. Ticket sales were slower than expected and organizers could not risk a financial loss, Pēteris Pētersons told Latvians Online in an e-mail. The three concerts made up what was being titled LatRock6, to follow LatRock5, a three-day tour of England during March by the rock band Dzelzs Vilks.

Vilnis Baumanis will be honored at the annual Ēriks Raisters Memorial Fund function at 2 p.m. April 19 at Priedaine, 1017 Highway 33 East, Freehold. Baumanis, known for his central role in the musical ensemble Trīs no Pārdaugavas, will read his own humorous poetry at the event. The Baltic Trio in Toronto

The Baltic Trio will perform at 2 p.m. April 20 in the Glenn Gould Studio, Canadian Broadcasting Centre, 250 Front St. W., Toronto. The trio was created in 1988. Celebrated Lithuanian flutist Algridas Vizgirda, Latvian harpsichordist Aina Kalnciema and Estonian cellist Teet Jarvi represent the highest standards of musical culture in their respective homelands.
