ALA sponsors Culture Days
The American Latvian Association (ALA) sponsors Culture Days (Kultūras dienas) from Feb. 12-14 in the Latvian Culture Center of Colorado, 10705 W. Virginia Ave., Lakewood. The program includes a presentation by Juris Mežinskis, chair of the ALA; information on Latvian language and education programs; displays of Latvian crafts; a Saturday dance with the Lithuanian band Kolorado Vabalai, and a ski outing to Winter Park. Valentine’s dance set in Chicago
A Valentine’s Dance (Sirsniņu balle) hosted by the American Latvian Youth Association (Amerikas latviešu jaunatnes apvienība, or ALJA) is scheduled at 8 p.m. Feb. 12 at the home of Kārlis Lenšs, 1528 North Halsted St., Unit A, Chicago. U.S. military funds renovation of 10 fire stations across Latvia
Ten fire stations across Latvia, most of them in the eastern part of the country, will be renovated during the next five years in a USD 1.5 million project funded by the U.S. military.

Book by German historian examines early years of Rīga Latvian Society
The Rīga Latvian Society and its landmark building at Merķeļa iela 13 have played an important role in fostering Latvian national identity. A recently released book, Rīgas Latviešu biedrība un latviešu nacionālā kustība no 1868. līdz 1905. gadam, examines the society’s early history.

Latvian long jumper earns gold, makes history in European championships
The fourth time was the charm for Latvian long jumper Ineta Radēviča, who scored big July 28 during the 20th European Athletic Championships in Spain, leaping to a new personal best and earning a gold medal for her country.
