The Singing Revolution, a documentary about nonviolent resistance to Soviet occupation in Estonia and the Baltics, will be presented at 1:30 p.m. June 23 in the Angelika Film Center & Café, 5321 East Mockingbird Lane, Dallas. Latvians in the Maryland and District of Columbia area are invited to celebrate Jāņi and Līgo vakars beginning at 5 p.m. June 23 at the home of jeweler Aleksandrs Pāriņš, 13300 Old Indian Head Road, Brandywine. - Jāņi in Toronto
Jāņi will be celebrated beginning at 6 p.m. June 23 in the Latvian Canadian Cultural Centre, 4 Credit Union Drive, Toronto. First on the schedule is a cocktail hour and dinner, followed by a program at 7:30 p.m. with singing and folk dancing. Admission is CAD 20, plus CAD 12 for those wishing dinner. Latvians living in Moscow will be celebrating the summer solstice with a bonfire, singing and dancing on June 23 in the village of Izmailovo. All are invited and kindly asked to bring along Jāņi wreaths, flowers and grasses, as well as beer, cheese and other foods. - BALSSI summer language courses
The Baltic Summer Studies Institute (BALSSI) will take place this summer from June 23 to Aug. 15 at the University of California at Los Angeles. BALSSI offers basic, intensive language courses in Estonian, Latvian, and Lithuanian—a year’s worth of training in eight weeks. - Jāņi in Limerick
A Jāņi celebration begins at 20:30 hours June 23 at Scout Centre, Curraghchase Forest Park, Co. Limerick. Admission is EUR 8 for adults and EUR 4 for children to age 16. For those taking the event bus from Limerick, the total cost is EUR 12. The bus will leave at 20:00 hours from the tourism center near Tesco in Limerick. The bus will return to Limerick the following morning at 2 a.m. Tickets are available from noon until 13:00 hours June 14 and June 21 on the second-floor cafeteria in the Tesco store in Limerick.
