Michigan
Jāņi at Gaŗezers

Jāņi celebrations are planned June 21 at and near the Latvian Center Gaŗezers, 57732 Lone Tree Road, Three Rivers. Activities begin in the morning with the Dr. V. Kore memorial golf tournament at the Pine View Golf Club, 52065 Pulver Road, Three Rivers. At Gaŗezers, an exhibit of work by artist Linda Treija will open at 1 p.m. in the Klinklāvs Gallery. At 7 p.m. in the Song Valley (Dziesmu leja), a program of music and dance is scheduled. Featured will be the women’s singing group Idvase from Indianapolis and the dance troupes Čikāgas Dzelmieši, Čikāgas Randiņš and Indianapoles Jautrais pāris. Jāņi celebrations will continue with a bonfire, singing and dancing to a Lithuanian band. For further information, visit www.garezers.org.

DižTalka and Jāņi in the Catskills

‘The Singing Revolution’ in Winnipeg

The Singing Revolution, a documentary about nonviolent resistance to Soviet occupation in Estonia and the Baltics, will be presented at 1:10 p.m., 3:10 p.m., 7:10 p.m. and 9:10 p.m. June 21 in the Landmark Globe Cinema, 393 Portage Ave., Winnipeg. ‘The Singing Revolution’ in Dallas

Belgium
‘Škroderdienas Silmačos,’ then Jāņi in Grez-Doiceau

Latvians in Belgium are invited to celebrate Jāni with two events June 21. The Brussels Latvian Theater will perform the classic Rūdolfs Blaumanis play “Skroderdienas Silmačos” at 15:00 hours in the offices of the Latvian Permanent Representative to the European Union, avenue des Arts 23, Brussels. Afterward, a bus will leave at 18:30 hours for a meadow near Grez-Doiceau for līgo celebrations together with Lithuanians in Belgium. A large tent will provide shelter in the meadow, but participants may also bring their own tents. The folklore ensemble Madaviņa from Latvia will provide live music. The bus will return to Brussels at 1:30 hours June 22. Admission is EUR 8 if paid in advance or EUR 10 on the day of the event. Admission for members of the Latvian Society in Belgium is EUR 5, but children age 12 and younger get in free. Further information about the event is available by visiting www.ligo.be.

Choir celebrates Jāņi

An afternoon of singing to celebrate Jāņi is scheduled at 3 p.m. June 21 in the Latvian Church Hall, 425 Hoffman St., San Francisco. The event is sponsored by the Latvian Choir of Northern California.

California
Jāņi at White Rock Lake

The Latvian Association of Southern California is organizing a Jāņi celebration beginning at 3 p.m. June 21 at White Rock Lake, 10645 Soledad Canyon Road, Saugus. The evening is to include singing, dancing and food. A novuss table also will be available for those who wish to play. Participants should bring their own tents and sleeping bags. Admission to the event is USD 25 for adults, USD 5 for children ages 12-16. Children younger than 12 will be admitted free. A USD 5 fee is charged for each vehicle that enters the park.

New Jersey
Jāņi at Priedaine

Celebrants of Midsummer (Jāņi) will be welcomed starting at 4 p.m. June 21 at Priedaine, 1017 Highway 33 East, Freehold. After 5:30 p.m. there will be performances by folk dance groups and musical ensembles, followed by dancing for all. Singer Ance Krauze from Latvia performs in concert from 7-8:30 p.m. Admission is USD 20. For more information, please visit www.priedaine.org.

Jāņi in Hamburg

Latvians and their friends in the Hamburg area will celebrate Jāņi beginning at 17:00 hours June 21 at the home of Svenja Furken, Brauner Hirsch 70, Ahrensburg. The event is organized by the Latvian Society in Hamburg (Latviešu biedrība Hamburgā). A bonfire, singing and other activities are planned. Admission is EUR 5. Jāņi in Cleveland

A Jāņi celebration begins at 5 p.m. June 21 in the Ottawa Point Reserved Picnic Area of Cleveland Metroparks’ Brecksville Reservation, located in Brecksville south of Cleveland. Participants should bring their own food. Admission is by donation. The event is organized by the Latvian Welfare Association Daugavas Vanagi.

Jāņi at Piesaule

Jāņi will be celebrated starting at 5:30 p.m. June 21 at the Boston Latvian Congregation Camp Piesaule, Lake Massasecum, Bradford. A church service is scheduled at 11 a.m. June 22. For further information, visit piesaule.org.

Ireland
Jāņi at Rathbeggan Lakes

A Jāņi celebration begins with family events at 18:00 hours June 21 at Rathbeggan Lakes, County Meath, and continues until the next morning. The family events run until 21:00 hours and will include various attractions, including ceramics lessons with Leo Cīrulis, games with Jampadracis and a Latvian business exhibit. The Līgo celebration, led by Bonija, is set to start at 21:00 hours. The band Kreicbergas ziķeri from Latvia will provide live music and a buffet will be available through the night. Admission to just the family events is EUR 15. Admission to the entire celebration is EUR 30 (or EUR 25 if purchased in advance). Jāņi at Straumēni

A Jāņi celebration begins at 18:30 hours June 21 at the Straumēni rest home, Catthorpe Manor, Catthorpe, Leicestershire. The dance troupes Janita and Oļi, both from Olaine in Latvia, will perform. Also on the program is a buffet, a lottery and refreshments. Admission is GPB. Those staying in tents or motorhomes will be charged GPB 3.

Summer solstice celebration at Sidrabene

A summer solstice celebration begins at 7 p.m. June 21 at Camp Sidrabene, 5100 Appleby Line, Milton West. On the program is the show “Jāņu sēta” at 7 p.m., a dance to the music of rock group Lusts starting at 9 p.m., and performances and singing at 10 p.m. Folk dance troupes appearing will include Diždancis, Daugaviņa and Dižaisdancis. Musical director for the evening is Helēna Ginters and program director is Maija Ķuze. A worship service is scheduled at 11 a.m. June 22. Adult admission to the events is CAD 25; students get in for CAD 10. Children to age 12 get in free.

Jāņi at the Tupesis property

A Jāņi celebration is set to start the evening of June 21 at the rural Tupesis property south of Tomah. Participants may stay in tents on the property or in nearby hotels. It is expected that some celebrants from Dievsēta near Warrens will join the festivities. A Jāņi celebration is planned June 21 at the home of Elita and Gunārs Veide near Göteborg. Participants are asked to bring food and, if they wish to stay the night, sleeping bags. Jāņi at Dievsēta

A Jāņi celebration begins at about 7 p.m. June 21 at the Latvian center Dievsēta, 19264 Bittersweet Ave., Warrens. All day participants will be able to help prepare food, make wreaths and enjoy other activities. Some participants likely also will travel to the Tupesis property near Tomah to celebrate. Dinner will be served June 21 and breakfast on June 22. Accommodations, including for those in tents, ir USD 15 for adults and USD 5 for children ages 6-13. Meals are USD 5 for adults and USD 2 for children ages 6-13. Children age 5 and younger are admitted free. Those expecting to stay overnight at Dievsēta, either in rooms or in tents, should register by contacting Zinta Pone at +1 (612) 751-1679 or . Dievsēta is owned by the Piemare congregation of the Dievturi.

Cosmos in Ottawa
