“Rīgas sargi” in Boston

The hit historical drama Rīgas sargi will be screened at 10 a.m. May 10 in the Circle Cinema, 399 Chestnut Hill Ave., Brighton. The film is in Latvian with English subtitles. Directed by Aigars Grauba, the movie depicts events in November 1919 when in the aftermath of the First World War a part of the defeated German army still based in the newly independent Latvia regrouped under General Rüdiger von der Goltz. The rogue general ordered an attack on Rīga, but the vastly outnumbered Latvian beat back the Germans. Reserve tickets in advance by calling Marcis Voldiņš at +1 (617) 969-2310. ‘Horse holiday’ at Dievsēta

Ūsiņš is the traditional Latvian patron of horses, who will be honored at the Ūsiņi celebration May 10-11 at Dievsēta, 19264 Bittersweet Ave., Warrens. This is the time when young men took their horses out to pasture overnight for the first time after the long winter, and the folks at Dievsēta accordingly spend this evening outdoors, cooking a traditional egg dish over a campfire. Plan to arrive earlier in the day Saturday and stay until Sunday. Those who wish are invited to help in cleaning up the Dievsēta yard and do other small jobs that have piled up over the winter. Meals cost USD 5 and lodging is USD 15 (less for children). If you plan to attend, contact Elga Pone at +1 (612) 827-4820 or .
