The Brisbane chapter of the Daugavas Vanagi hosts an afternoon of playing the card game zolīte beginning noon May 18 at the Brisbane Latvian House, 24 Church Ave., Buranda. Participation is AUD 7.50 and all are welcome. Upcoming dates are June 8 and July 13 at noon. Source: Brisbanes ziņotājs.

Brisbane Latvian school dates
The Brisbane area Latvian school “Sauleszaķis” meets twice a month from 15:00 to 17:00 at the Brisbane Latvian House, 24 Church Ave., Buranda. The next meeting dates are: May 12, May 26, June 9, July 14 and July 28. “Sauleszaķis” offers a bilingual environment for children of all ages and language abilities to learn Latvian traditions, songs, dances and games. All interested in sewing, knitting and weaving traditional Latvian designs may meet with other like-minded people of the “Brisbanes rokdarbnieču kopa” at 1 p.m. May 26, June 30 and July 28 at the Brisbane Latvian House, 24 Church Ave., Buranda. Brisbane Latvians to celebrate Midsummer
Join Brisbane area Latvians for a song and dance filled celebration of Jāņi (Midsummer) beginning at 14:00 on June 22 at the Brisbane Latvian House, 24 Church Ave., Buranda. Admission is AUD 5 and free for children. Lunch, including dessert and coffee/tea, is AUD 20 for adults and AUD 10 for children. All proceeds will benefit the Brisbane Latvian House. June 17Cultural camp for children and teens in Latgale
This summer the Latgalian Traditional Cultural Center “Latgaļu sāta” offers two camps concentrating on traditional culture at “Latgaļu sāta”, Madžuļi, Dekšāru pagasts, Viļānu novads. The first camp, from June 17 to June 23, is for teens aged 13 to 17. The second camp, from July 29 to Aug. 4, is for children aged 7 to 13. Participants will have the opportunity to try various traditional crafts and skills such as pottery, kokle playing, cheese making, sauna traditions, singing, painting and Latgalian language. The camp also includes more common camp activities like swimming, games and campfires. This summer children will also be able to create their own video clips and go on a field trip to Lake Lubāns. All activities are led by certified and experienced teachers and camp staff. Accommodation is in tents. The participation fee is LVL 80. June 30Song Festival in Latvia
The 25th General Song Festival and 15th Dance Festival will take place in Latvia from Jun. 30 to Jul. 7. This is the big festival that is organized once every five years and will this year include an estimated 90,000 participants from Latvia and Latvian communities abroad. As the tributes to departed Latvian poet Imants Ziedonis continue, of the many archival recordings that have been recently released, one of the most memorable is Atsaukšanas (Upe tuviem un tāliem, UPETTCD074), released to coincide with what would have been the poet’s 80th birthday.

Non-citizen voting in Latvian local elections
One of Russia’s foreign policy objectives in the former Soviet space is non-citizen voting in local elections. The upcoming Latvian municipal elections again put this issue on the front burner.
