Christmas bazaar in Philadelphia

The traditional Christmas Bazaar (tirdziņš) will begin at noon Dec. 6 at the Philadelphia Society of Free Letts, 531 N. 7th St., Philadelphia. Latvian jewelry, books, compact discs, cards, decorations, hand-knitted hats and other Latvian crafts will be on sale from Balticshop.com and other vendors. Piparkūkas, pīrāgi, Latvian bread, cake and pies, gray peas, gotiņas and other foods will also be available for purchase. Enjoy a Latvian style lunch with some Latvian beer afterwards. Open to the public.

Massachusetts

Premiere of Vasks’ music at Harvard

The Harvard-Radcliffe Chorus, conducted by Kevin Leong, will perform Francis Poulenc’s radiant “Gloria” and the Boston-area premiere of the haunting “Dona nobis pacem” by contemporary Latvian composer Pēteris Vasks at 8 p.m. Dec. 6 in Sanders Theatre at Harvard University, 45 Quincy St., Cambridge. Advent concert in New York

The New York Latvian Choir presents an Advent Sunday concert at 10 a.m. Dec. 7 in the New York Latvian Ev. Lutheran Church, 253 Valentine Lane, Yonkers. The choir will sing the cantata “Ziemassvētku vakarā” by Ēriks Ešenvalds and the cantata “Latviešu Ziemassvētki” by Romualds Jermaks. Featured performers will include Laila Liepiņa (soprano), Sarma Dindzāne-Vansenta (alto), the New York Latvian choir, the Bronx chamber orchestra, and conductors Andrejs Jansons and Laura Padega Zāmura. A light lunch will be served after the concert. Admission is USD 25 and includes both the concert and lunch; children 13 and under will be admitted free. The ladies’ auxiliary will also be selling books.

Christmas bazaar and fair on Long Island

A Christmas bazaar and fair will follow the 10:30 a.m. church service on Dec. 7 at the Latvian Ev. Lutheran Church, 4 Riga Lane, Melville. Enjoy a Latvian style lunch and then buy home-baked gingerbread cookies, rye bread, cakes, pīrāgi, barley sausage, grey peas, gotiņa candies and other delicacies. The annual “Brīvļaužu” Christmas celebration will take place at 10 a..m. Dec. 9 in the Brisbane Latvian House, 24 Church Ave., Buranda. The choir Beverīna will sing at the event, which will also include a small craft and foods sale. Cost for tea and lunch is AUD 10.

Craft, gift sale in Brisbane

Saule Ltd. is hosting a rummage, craft, gift and foods sale from 8:00 to 13:00 hours Dec. 13. in the Brisbane Latvian House, 24 Church Ave., Buranda. The local chapter of Daugavas Vanagi will hold its annual meeting and Christmas party following the sale beginning at 14:00 hours.

Cookie baking and Christmas bazaar in Brooklyn

The annual Christmas program and gingerbread baking party begins at 1 p.m. Dec. 13 in the Latvian Ev. Lutheran Church of New York, 564 Second St., Brooklyn. The cookie baking will take place from 1-3 p.m. Gingerbread dough will be available on site for USD 5, but please register beforehand by contacting Vija Eversone-Garvey at +1 (646) 334-8263 or . 2x2 youth seminar

The Latvian youth seminar 2x2 will take place from Dec. 26-31 at the Miracle Camp and Retreat Center, 25281 80th Ave., Lawton. 2x2 offers a wide variety of in-depth seminars and workshops on many Latvian topics, including politics, art, folklore, film, literature, foods, silversmithing, dancing, youth culture, and outdoor winter adventures. 2x2 is meant for youths at least 18 years of age. The day will begin at noon with a historic tour of Independence Hall. Cocktails will begin at 6 p.m., with dinner at 7 p.m. Dancing will begin at 8 p.m. with live music provided by 925 Entertainment. Join fellow revelers for the Mummers’ Day parade on Jan. 1. Dinner costs USD 15.
