Arts center exhibits Daina Krūmiņš’ artwork
The Barron Arts Center will be hosting an exhibit of Daina Krūmiņš’ artwork from Aug. 21 through Sept. 15 at the Barron Arts Center, 582 Rahway Ave, Woodbridge. The exhibit will include photomontages, sculptures and films by Krūmiņš.The opening reception is scheduled at 7 p.m. Aug. 22. Apjumības and craft exhibit at Dievsēta
The Dievturi community celebrates a harvest festival, Apjumības, from Sept. 4-6 at Dievsēta, 19264 Bittersweet Road, Warrens. The weekend will include a small exhibit of art and crafts produced by Dievsēta regulars, dinner, and then a bonfire. The Brisbane chapter of Daugavas Vanagi hosts an afternoon of playing the card game zolīte at 13:00 hours Sept. 11 at the Brisbane Latvian House, 24 Church Ave., Buranda. Participation is AUD 5 and all are welcome.

Yoga and a movie in Brisbane
Join the Brisbane Brīvļaudis for tea, lunch and the movie Rudens rozes at 10 a.m. Sept. 14 at the Brisbane Latvian House, 24 Church Ave., Buranda. Morning yoga exercises are offered from 10:30-11 a.m. Cost is AUD 15 and includes tea and lunch.

Spring dances and songs
Enjoy the Australian springtime with some Latvian dances and songs at 3 p.m. Sept. 18 at the Brisbane Latvian House, 24 Church Ave., Buranda. This event is for all ages and will include a smorgasbord-style dinner. Cost is AUD 15 for adults with all proceeds to benefit the Brisbane Latvian House. University of Latvia anniversary to be held in Brisbane
The Brisbane Latvian community will celebrate the anniversary of the founding of the University of Latvia at 2 p.m. Sept. 25 at the Brisbane Latvian House, 24 Church Ave., Buranda. Inta Gertnere will be the keynote speaker with a lecture about gifted children, their traits and education. Wine and snacks will be available after the presentation. Admission is by donation.

Voting and a harvest festival in Brisbane
The Brisbane Latvian House, 24 Church Ave., Buranda, will be open most of the day on Oct.2. Polls there will open to voters in the Latvian election at 7 a.m. and stay open until 10 p.m. Voters can enjoy coffee, tea and cakes from 9 a.m. to noon. At 1 p.m. the Queensland Latvian Ev.-Lutheran Congregation will hold its annual Harvest Festival (Pļaujas svētki) with a lottery and bazaar. Participants are asked to bring a food or beverage to share. Admission is free.

Remembering the deceased at Dievsēta
A traditional remembrance of deceased friends and family members will take place Oct. 9-10 at Dievsēta, 19264 Bittersweet Road, Warrens. This event is called both “Dievaines” or “Veļu vakars” and varies from community to community. At Dievsēta it involves a feast, singing and song-games. Dievsēta offers rustic accommodation, but participants are asked to register in advance. American Latvian Youth Association congress
The 58th annual American Latvian Youth Congress (Amerikas Latviešu jaunatnes apvienība, or ALJA) will take place Nov. 24-28 at the Omni Severin Hotel, 40 West Jackson Place, Indianapolis. The congress draws young Latvians from across the United States and Canada, where they take part in lectures, activities, the annual general meeting, dances and parties. Cost for the weekend (excluding hotel and parking) is presently USD 110, but will increase for registration after June 30. Latvian, Georgian collaboration results in remarkable world music album
One of the most intriguing recent collaborations in Latvian music is that of composer Valts Pūce and the Georgian ensemble The Shin. Joining together on the recording entitled Es arī, their talents have produced a unique album, combining elements of Latvian and Georgian folk songs, as well as jazz and other world music elements.
