BALSSI 2009 at UW-Madison

The Center for Russia, East Europe, and Central Asia and the Department of Scandinavian Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison hosts the Baltic Studies Summer Institute (BALSSI) from June 15-Aug. 7. Elementary Estonian, Latvian, and Lithuanian language courses will be offered, as well as lectures (in English) on Baltic history and culture and a rich program of cultural events related to the Baltic countries. Information and application materials are available on the BALSSI Web site, www.creeca.wisc.edu/balssi. The deadline for applications is April 13. BALSSI is sponsored by a consortium of 12 U.S. universities and receives additional support from the Association for the Advancement of Baltic Studies. 3x3 camp for children in England

This summer’s 3x3 camp in England will take place from Aug. 2-9. Although originally a camp for people of all ages, the 3x3 camps in England have evolved into camps that are primarily meant for children. The working language has also switched to mostly English. Children spend a week immersed in educational and fun activities devoted to learning about their Latvian heritage. A 3x3 camp is scheduled from Aug. 9-16 at the Latvian Center Gaŗezers, 57732 Lone Tree Road, Three Rivers. 3x3 is a week-long experience for Latvian-speaking children and adults. Families and singles of all ages are welcome. Children spend the days at fun and educational activities, while adults attend seminars and workshops about various Latvian topics, such as folklore, politics, literature, silversmithing, woodworking, and weaving. Seminars, workshops, and children’s activities are led by knowledgeable experts in their respective fields from Latvia and abroad. All generations come together during the evenings for more activities and, of course, singing. Three Tenors sing in New York

Latvia’s three tenors (Miervaldis Jenčs, Nauris Puntulis and Guntars Ruņģis) will perform a benefit concert for the Latvian National Opera at 5 p.m. Aug. 29 in the Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church of New York, 4 Riga Lane, Melville. Virtuoso Juris Kulakovs will accompany the tenors. A dinner, lottery, social evening and dancing to music by John Weber will follow the concert. Formal attire is preferred. Seating is limited, so reserve your tickets soon. Tickets are USD 75 if purchased before Aug. 15, USD 85 if purchased after that.
