Latvia’s place in the Universe

Sanita Kubliņa of Latvia, whose idol is President Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga, didn’t make the cut in this year’s Miss Universe competition. The 22-year-old from Rīga was one of 86 contestants to appear in the Los Angeles event on July 23.
If you want to still catch a glimpse of Miss Latvia, visit the official Miss Universe site. One curious thing about the site is that Kubliņa’s video interview is not translated. Questions appear on the screen in English and then she answers in Latvian, including letting the audience know she is amazed by and has great respect for the president.
Kubliņa’s chances of winning were 100:1, according to the online betting service SportingBet
Last year we criticized Ieva Kokoreviča for her national costume, which essentially consisted of a super-sized sakta on a red dress. This year we have to wonder what Kubliņa had in mind with her national costume.
The 2006 title, by the way, went to Miss Puerto Rico, Zuleyka Rivera.
