New coins honor chimney sweeps, basketball

Lucky Latvia is getting a million chimney sweeps—pictured on the back of a new 1-lat coin just released by the central bank in Rīga.

The coin is the latest in a series of special 1-lat pieces issued by the Bank of Latvia, a spokesperson said in a Dec. 3 press release.

Viesturs Koziols is a real estate development entrepreneur and adventurer in Latvia. He is co-holder of the Latvian hot air balloon height and distance records and has been to the North Pole. Koziols is president of Avantis, a non-government youth organization that sponsored the film Atrasts Amerikā (Found in America). Koziols also is president and part owner (12.18 percent) of Dinamo Riga, a new hockey team that plays in Russia's Kontinental Hockey League. In an interview from Finland, he talks about the team and its prospects.
